Before the world shut down, I had the opportunity to sit down with The Swon Brothers at Country Radio Seminar. Not only are these brothers the nicest but they have a new song out, perfect to celebrate Mother’s Day called Mommas!

After gaining national attention on The Voice, this duo has gained a dedicated “swontourage” and received many nominations in the industry. They’ve toured with the biggest names in country music and have a legend on their song, “Travelin’ On”.

Before the Nashville tornadoes and COVID-19 took over, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the Six String Soldiers at the Country Radio Seminar.

Six String Soldiers, the Army Field Band are composed of 5 members who perform Americana and patriotic music in order to connect America to its Army. The group was formed in 2015 by active-duty soldiers who were looking for a way to fulfill the Army’s commitment to its soldiers and veterans.

They have received national media attention and their record, recorded in Nashville and Muscle Shoals, was released this year.

We are in the kitchen with Molly Reed Grayson, mom of 2 and one on the way, songwriter and host of “Sunday Bakes”. Molly is sharing her story with us on the podcast and sharing a delicious recipe for Old Fashioned Donut Muffins.

Old Fashioned Donut Muffins

INGREDIENTS

For the Muffins

• 1/4 cup butter
• 1/4 cup vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup brown sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup milk

For the Glaze

• 3 tablespoons butter melted
• 1 cup confectioners’ sugar; sifted
• 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 tablespoons hot water

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line 12 muffin cups with muffin liners or spray with nonstick cooking spray.In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together butter, vegetable oil, and sugars till smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time. With the mixer on low speed, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and vanilla until just combined. Stir the flour into the butter mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour and mixing until just combined. Do not overmix!Spoon batter into cups, filling the cups, and smooth tops. Divide batter equally among prepared muffin cups. Bake until muffin tops are a pale golden and springy to the touch, 15 to 17 minutes, rotating halfway through baking time. Cool muffins in muffin tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack and cool 10 minutes before glazing.To make the glaze, In a medium bowl mix together the melted butter, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and water. Whisk until smooth.When muffins have cooled slightly, dip the muffin crown into the glaze and allow the glaze to harden. Once hardened, dip a second time, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and allow to harden then serve.

November is Adoption month. Bloom Family Designs has a mission to create beautifully designed rooms for adopted and foster children to help welcome them HOME. The organization was founded in Nashville and has now expanded to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

Founder Melissa Whitlock wanted to use her love of interior design to impact friends and families who have adopted or fostered children. With donations and volunteers giving their time, families receive this “room makeover” at NO COST. However, the feeling that the parents and children feel is absolutely PRICELESS!
