Fabian Schon is a long time jumper with a significant history in fitness coaching, both online and in person. Our conversation is, in a lot of ways, a masterclass on accidental pitfalls and silent bad habits that can develop based on how you start jumping. So if you’re new to jump rope you should REALLY dial into this one to save yourself a lot of headache. And even if you’ve been jumping for a while you’ll still dig the details.
We get into so much, including videos that inspired Fabian to learn freestyle, the process of undoing bad habits that we learned on accident, a few of the most common bad habits that jumpers tend to learn, having practical and attainable expectations for learning freestyle skills, coaching versus giving tips, achieving mental freedom with jump rope, and a whole lot more.

Alex started jumping for recreational fitness in 2019 and has developed his jumping into a very recognizable, snappy style. We go over his whole journey and I think it will really resonate with everyone, but especially newer jumpers who are learning about the recreational community.
We get into so many awesome topics, including how Alex’s jump rope journey has evolved over the years from a fitness exercise to competitive level freestyle, the way he found his jump rope tribe through Instagram, how to define your own definition for consistency, the path to learning high level jump rope skill (spoiler: it comes from consistency), skills Alex has struggled with, why your foundations are so important, how Alex trains his freestyle, and a whole lot more.

There's been a good chunk of episodes so far, and after looking through some of download stats and getting messages from you all over the years, I’ve decided to start cutting up episodes around a loose theme! There’s a lot of good stuff in some of the older episodes, and a lot of complimentary topics between guests, so I wanted to put it together and see how you all like it.
Today we’re focusing on the jump rope journey and hearing from a few different jumpers to hear about how their journey has developed and the different ways they think about their jumping. Here's the links to each of the original episodes:
#71 Bernadette
#69 Francis
#41 Dustin
#7 Mike

Celina Furman and Chris Walker are two of my favorite jumpers to hang with and talk all things jump rope. I’ve done separate podcasts with Celina and Chris individually, but I thought it would be fun to have them both on together, and it was indeed a blast!
Celina is a lifelong competitive and performance jump roper, with an extensive history in the sport. She also was a founding member of the A2 jump rope club at the University of Michigan. Chris is a jump rope coach and owner of the Jump Rope Company, making some of the best ropes out there. He’s always doing work to support the growth of adult recreational jump rope
This is a fun episode because Celina comes from the competitive sport side of jump rope, and Chris comes from the adult recreational side, which made for a VERY fun, mixed conversation. We get into a lot in this episode including defining what a jump rope coach is, the differences between coaching and giving tips, undoing bad jump rope habits, whether or not jump rope is bad for your knees, the best surfaces to jump on, a brief history of how long jump rope skills have been around and where their names came from, the reason why we don’t need new names for these skills, how to use social media to help your jump rope journey, and a lot more!

Kenzie Christensen is a long time competitive jump roper and member of Flight Crew Jump Rope Team
We get into loads of details about growing up in the competitive jump rope world, which was super fun! If you’re not a competitive jumper just a heads up that there will be some specific references, but you’ll still really dig this episode.
We talk about so much in our conversation, including growing up in the sport of jump rope, how Kenzie’s competitive training improved over the years, why speed step isn’t as popular as freestyle, and the growth of jump rope organizations over the last decade or so.
We also get into the jump rope club Kenzie started in College, how that club put on workshops for the local elementary school, the differences between coaching youth competitive jumpers versus adult recreational jumpers, and a whole lot more!

Kait Simpson and Robbie Csontos are two legends of the competitive jump rope space!
We get into the weeds with competitive jump rope culture in this episode, and it's awesome! If you're not a competitive jumper, you'll still dig it but just know that we bring up a bunch of references here
We get into a LOT during our conversion, including the skills that Kait and Robbie have created, Kait’s detailed process for creating new competitive routines, why Robbie does the hardest tricks he can in his routines, and how both of their jumping has evolved over the years.
We also get into some other topics like the injuries Robbie has had (and powered through during competitions), the trend of renaming skills that have existed for a long time, whether or not there’s a peak age for a competitive jump rope athlete, and a lot more!

The jump rope community has grown tremendously over the last few years as a result of the pandemic. So what better way to start off the year than by a massive episode that details nearly every frequently asked question about jump for all skill levels? So that’s what we’re doing today my dear jump rope friends!
(I've also created a new, FREE beginner program with everything you need to get started correctly)
This episode is divided up into a few different parts, starting with Beginner topics like the best gear and the correct skills to practice - all the stuff you might be curious as a new jumper!
From there we’ll get into some intermediate jumping topics, then intermediate “plus," which is just my way of saying “tough, not tough to the max… tough that’s still doable.”
After that we’ll rock out some advanced topics and then we’ll finish up with some thoughts on Mindset and Trends in the jump rope community.

Brian and I first talked on episode back in 2019 and we’ve connected again to recap the current state of the jump rope world. In case you missed the first episode, Brian is a very accomplished 16-time world champion who also co-founded the American Jump Rope Federation.
We cover a wide range of topics, including the process to host a virtual national tournament, the two most undervalued techniques in jump rope right now, physiologic changes during very long speed step runs, new competition formats that could foster growth in the sport, limitations and growth during the pandemic, defining what “new” jump rope skills are, and a whole lot more.

"It's a lifestyle and that's not going to change because we genuinely enjoy it. This has nothing to do with the numbers on the scales, this has nothing to do with the amount of adipose on my body... This makes me feel like me." — Deana "Jump Rope Gal"
I've known Deana (AKA Jump Rope Gal) for a few years now. You can find her on YouTube and Instagram. She's been on the podcast before, episode 36 with her "jump rope band" Mel and Kyle. If you dig this episode, you'll likely dig that one too.
Today we get into so many topics that all revolve around being the most authentic version of yourself. We discuss why Deana doesn't prefer the term "fitness," identifying unspoken assumptions when making decisions, defining discipline and how it relates to jump rope, things to know as a beginner, and a lot more. Deana definitely delivers a big dose of positivity in this episode, so if you've been stuck lately for any reason you'll really enjoy what Deana has to say.

"I don't believe anyone can be held down if they allow themselves to push hard enough. I see [competitive jump rope] and I know it's possible, so the next step is figuring out how to start." - Grim Leaper
Grim Leaper and I have known each other for several years now (before the pandemic even!), and we've have loads of incredible conversations about jump rope, the sport, speed training, freestyle, etc. We also tend to heckle each other a bunch, which is hilarious and always makes me laugh. As a heads up, there's lots of profanity in today's episode haha so consider yourself warned.
Grim and I chat about loads of topics, including his journey from recreational to competitive jumper, how to get yourself moving when you have low motivation, performance enhancement compounds in sports, being open to all styles of jumping, specialization in the sport of jump rope, a huge section dedicated to speed step training and how to start, and loads more.
