SADC to hold 45th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in Antananarivo, Madagascar on 17 August 2025

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will convene its 45th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on 17 August 2025 at the Ivato Conference Center in Antananarivo, Republic of Madagascar. This marks a historic moment for Madagascar, which became a Member State of SADC in August 2005.

Hosted under the theme, “Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC,” the Summit will focus on accelerating regional integration through key pillars: strengthening industrial capacity and regional value chains, modernising agriculture, and promoting an inclusive energy transition, all aimed at building a resilient, sustainable, and cohesive SADC region.

2.    DR Congo- Kinshasha 

DR Congo former justice minister faces 10 years in prison

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s former justice minister, Constant Mutamba, faces 10 years in prison if found guilty of embezzlement.

He is accused of attempting to steal nearly $20 million in public funds intended to finance the construction of a prison in the city of Kisangani.

In the politically charged trial’s closing arguments on Wednesday, the prosecutor called for 10 years of hard labour for the politician.

He also called for a decade-long ban on Mutamba’s right to vote or stand for election.

South African is starting a “national convention ” Friday that is meant to bring all sectors of society together to discuss the country’s most pressing issues and find solutions. The talks, initiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa after calls from civil society, are expected to include most political parties, civic groups and members of the public.

However, there are concerns that the country has digressed over the last decade and calls for a soul-searching exercise grew louder after the long-governing African National Congress, or ANC, party lost its majority in the 2024 election, forcing South Africa to form a coalition government.

5.    In our historical archives, it was on this day 15 August 1925 when former president of the ANC Women’s League and a trained teacher, Gertrude Shope was born in Johannesburg but grew up in Zimbabwe. 

In 1966 the ANC convinced her to leave South Africa and join her husband, Mark Shope, in exile. While in exile, Gertrude and her husband travelled frequently to lobby as representatives of the ANC. In 1991 Shope was elected president of the ANC’s Women’s League, a position she held until 1993.
