1. Mali- Bamako

45 Malian soldiers and two generals were arrested over the weekend for attempts to” destabilise the institutions" in the Sahel country.

Among those arrested was General Abass Dembele, a former governor of the central Mopti region who is popular within army ranks.

Soldiers arrested Debele early Sunday morning on the outskirts of the capital, Bamako, without explaining the reasons for his apprehension, a source close to the General said.

2. Ghana – Accra

The Government of Ghana has buried two of the eight victims of the tragic helicopter crash at a solemn ceremony in the capital Accra.

The bodies of former Minister for Environment Ibrahim Muhammed Murtala, and Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, were interred at a military cemetery after a tribute by President John Mahama.

''I believe that they would have wanted us to continue the hard work that we were doing with them.

And so, in memory of them, we shall continue to work very hard to serve the people of Ghana to ensure the success of our research agenda so that their names will be written in gold in paradise,'' Mahama told mourners.

Ethiopia – Addis Ababa

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has signed an agreement with Ethiopian Airlines Group to mobilize $8 billion for the construction of Bishoftu International Airport, which is set to become Africa’s largest airport upon completion.

A ceremonial signing to formalize the arrangement was held in Addis Abeba yesteray, attended by Lemma Yadecha, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Commercial Officer, and AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina, senior Ethiopian Airlines executives, and other dignitaries.

In our historical archives, it was on this day 12 August 1949 when a conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland (1949) to revise the original Geneva Conventions.

The Geneva Conventions are comprised of four treaties and three protocols, which establish the standards of international law for the treatment of civilians and combatants during wartime.
