United Nations harnesses power of music for peace in South Sudan

Music is often referred to as a great unifier, capable of building bridges between different groups.

Now, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, has used this powerful tool to unite divided communities. UNMISS partnered with UNESCO to host a concert in Malakal in Upper Nile state, which has been the epicentre of conflict in recent months.

1.    USA- Qatar- DR Congo- Rwanda

Congo-Kinshasa: Joint Statement on Peace Talks between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, mediated by the United States and Observed by the State of Qatar

Following three days of talks, a peace agreement text was initialed at the State Department in Washington, DC by representatives from DR Congo and Rwanda. "We look forward to the Ministerial signing of the peace agreement in Washington on June 27 and subsequent timely implementation," said U.S. Undersecretary of State Allison M. Hooker.

2.    Ethiopia – Tigray 

NRC Reports Over 45,000 Ex-Combatants Demobilized in Tigray, Up From 17,000 

More than 45,000 former combatants from the Tigray region have been demobilized and reintegrated into their communities, Ethiopia's National Rehabilitation Commission (NRC) said, marking a sharp increase after less than two months since it reported that only 17,000 had completed the process.

4.    In our historical archives, it was on this day 19 June 1932 when an Afrikan prolific writer, linguist, translator and first secretary -general of the South African Native National Congress now  African National Congress,  Tshekisho Solomon Plaatje died at Nancefield Location in Gauteng during a visit away from Kimberley on 19 June 1932. He was 55 years old and the cause of death was pneumonia.
