Malawi Responds to South Africa Xenophobia Crisis, 150 Citizens Successfully Repatriated

Malawi has begun bringing home its citizens displaced by a fresh wave of xenophobia-related tensions in South Africa, with 150 Malawians now on their way back after being evacuated from temporary camps in Western Cape Province.

The first two buses carrying the returnees departed the Western Cape on Saturday in what the government has described as a coordinated humanitarian operation aimed at rescuing and safely returning vulnerable Malawians stranded in South Africa.

 Former Chief Justice Maraga Arrested During Protest Over Nairobi National Park Land Excision

Former Chief Justice David Maraga was among several environmental activists arrested on Monday during protests against the planned excision of 76 acres of protected land within Nairobi National Park. The demonstrators had gathered to oppose the proposed allocation of part of the parkland, arguing that it threatens wildlife conservation efforts and could set a dangerous precedent for the continued encroachment of protected areas.

SADC to hold 31st Annual General Meeting of the SADC Chiefs of Police Sub Committee/SARPCCO of the Inter – State Defence and Security Committee on 11-12 June 2026 The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will hold the 31st Annual General Meeting of the Chiefs of Police Sub-Committee/Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) in Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi, on 11-12 June 2026, to discuss regional measures to prevent and combat cross-border and transnational organised crime. The meeting will address key regional peace and security issues, with a particular focus on emerging and transnational organised crime, amongst others: cybercrime, financial crime, proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons, Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, illicit drug trafficking, motor vehicle crime, livestock crime, terrorism and other cross-border crimes affecting the region. 

4. In our historical archives, it was on this day, 9 June 1990, when the United Nations investigative team visited South Afrika.
