World News today: UKZN academic in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Fatima Suleman cautions that African countries must consider implementing a prescription monitoring scheme to ensure that Covid-19 patients who are being treated with Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine are protected against the serious side effects associated with these drugs. About a few days ago - an analysis published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) of 1,446 Covid-19 patients at a New York medical centre, 811 of whom received hydroxychloroquine, showed no benefit to using the drug.

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that all members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who were present when Collins Khosa was assaulted to death should be suspended. Khoza’s family had earlier approached the Constitutional Court which dismissed the case because of insufficient evidence. The family then approached the High Court to lodge an urgent application to force the government to intervene and reign in law enforcement’s heavy-handedness during the lockdown.

A number of private schools in the country may face closure as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the National Alliance of Independent School Association or NAISA, Independent schools' finances have been hard hit by the lockdown because patients are struggling to keep up with payments due to the lack of economic activity. JSE-listed private education group Advtech has reported a 20-percent drop in school fee collections for April, while Curro Holdings has offered schools, fee discounts ranging from 10 to 15 percent for accounts that are in good standing.
