The Black Power Civil Rights Movement says it will approach the CCMA to challenge the suspension of employees at the Lindela Repatriation Centre near Krugersdorp in Gauteng. Last week 37 foreign nationals escaped from the facility while waiting to be deported to their countries of origin. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has labelled the escape an inside job which he alleges to have been facilitated by the security guards employed at the facility. The movement says it has also raised its concerns with Parliament’s Home Affairs Portfolio Committee chairperson Bongani Bongo who led a delegation of MPs on a site visit to the facility this morning.

Currently we are told that more than 47 states (worldwide) and jurisdictions have had their elections postponed as a result of the Covid19 pandemic, something that should worry us as South Africa as we are due to hold municipal elections next year.

World News today: Yesterday, UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined plans for a phased reopening of Britain's economy, citing decreasing coronavirus hospitalisations and deaths, and asked anyone who cannot perform their jobs from home, such as construction and factory workers, to return to work. About a week ago, it was reported that Britain has overtaken Italy to record the highest official death toll from coronavirus in Europe with more than 32,000 deaths.

Coronavirus infections in South Africa continue to rise with the death toll as of yesterday jumping to 194. Three of the eight new deaths are from the Western Cape, four from Gauteng and one from the Eastern Cape. The total number of cases has now risen to 10 015 – what can this increase be attributed to?

About a couple of days ago, Police Minister General Bheki Cele raised a concern that some South Africans are not obeying lockdown regulations and warned Level 4 regulations could be reversed as Covid-19 has the potential of wiping off humankind. President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the parole of selected categories of sentenced offenders as part of the country’s coronavirus lockdown. The President has taken this decision in terms of Section 82(1)(a) of the Correctional Services Act of 1998 which empowers the President to authorise at any time the placement on correctional supervision or parole of any sentenced prisoner, subject to conditions that may be recommended by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board.
