On the 1st November 2019, South Africa became the first country in the world to implement a debit order system that requires banks to request electronic authorisation directly from their clients. It’s called DebiCheck and was instituted by the South African Reserve Bank and Payments Association South Africa (PASA), in response to an increase in fraudulent debit orders. There is a lot of information being released about DebiCheck, most of it confusing. Considering that 48 million debit orders are processed monthly across all industries, totaling approximately R80 billion in revenue. Andrew Springate joins us to discuss the implications for business and debt collectors.

Statistics released by Stats SA show that HIV/Aids is the leading cause of death among the 2.3 million young people aged 15 to 34 in the Western Cape. The Congress of Traditional Leadership of South Africa in the Eastern Cape has volunteered to intervene in the impasse between AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo and his son, acting King Azenathi Dalindyebo. This in an attempt restore stability among the AbaThembu. Tension between the father and son started when King Dalindyebo forcefully entered the Bumbane Great Place armed with an axe and a crowbar last Saturday. Acting King Azenathi and his wife ran for their lives but were wounded in the process. The situation became worse when the acting King Azenathi filed a protection order against his father.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the number of people infected by the coronavirus in South Africa remains 61, while four are being investigated.
