The South African Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by violence, looting, arson and vandalism plaguing much of Johannesburg; in areas such as Jeppestown, Malvern, Tembisa and surrounding areas. The Commission calls on the state and law enforcement agencies to restore the rule of law and end the violence plaguing these communities.

There are several violent protest actions and looting of foreign owned shops in various parts of Gauteng today. Police have managed to contain the situation in Tembisa east of Johannesburg following yet another looting incident. Meanwhile 31 people have been arrested after being found looting a shop in Malvern, east of Johannesburg.
