We hear from Mcebo Dlamini. This after the news that his trial has been set down for November 12 this year. Dlamini was arrested in October 2016 following protests for free education and he is facing a string of charges including public violence, assault, theft and malicious damage to property.

Yesterday, Julius Malema made startling claims that ANC NEC member, Derek Hanekom plotted with the EFF to bring down former President Jacob Zuma. Apparently Hanekom was not alone in this, he also mentioned the 1st Deputy General Secretary of the SACP Solly Mapaila as part of the alliance group that wanted Zuma out. Hanekom has since confirmed these claims.

Yesterday, the National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole appeared before the South African Human Rights Commission inquiry into possible human rights violations in Alexandra. The probe follows a spate of violent service delivery protests over housing in the area. He told the commission how the police in Alexandra were underresourced and under immense strain. The City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, has alleged that a syndicate is behind the illegal land occupations in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg. According to the mayor, land occupations are orchestrated by a local councillor and the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO). Lenasia residents living in bonded houses are against the occupations saying they’re de-valuing their properties

It’s official, as from tomorrow afternoon - Boris Johnson will become Britain’s next prime minister after being elected leader of the Conservative party, defeating Jeremy Hunt in the party’s leadership contest. The former mayor of London won the contest by 92,153 votes to 46,656, with 66% of the vote. Turnout was 87.4% among 159,320 party members.

Earlier on today, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni introduced the Special Appropriation Bill in the National Assembly which will offer Eskom a lifeline in the current and next financial year. Mboweni noted that Eskom faces serious financial and operational challenges, which to a large extent were caused by the governance challenges that the entity previously experienced which resulted in a decline in investor confidence.
