Two South African journalists have won awards in this year’s SADC Media Awards. One of those, Tshimologo Benjamin Moshatama from Channel Africa Radio was the second prize winner in the Radio Category with his entry on the importance of shared water resources in the SADC regional integration and development as well as the contribution of the Kingdom of Lesotho in the management of shared water resources. The SADC Media Awards present a unique opportunity for the SADC region’s journalists to be celebrated and recognised by their peers.

As tributes continue pouring in for renowned maths and science teacher Dr William Smith, his alma mater Rhodes University has joined in remembering South Africa's beloved “teacher of the nation”. Rhodes paid tribute to the “education giant” as it detailed his academic background with the university. The university conferred a degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) on Smith in 2021, just two years after he received its distinguished alumni award. Smith also completed his BSc and BSc (Hons), both with distinction, at the university. His parents, JLB Smith (who identified the coelacanth) and Margaret Smith (ichthyologist and accomplished fish illustrator) also had ties to the institution, Rhodes said. Smith died peacefully at his home in Perth, Australia, on yesterday surrounded by family. He moved there after his retirement to live with his family.

Action SA’s wish to play an oversight role in the City of Joburg has come to pass, as its caucus leader, Nobuhle Mthembu, was elected council speaker yesterday. Mthembu’s election to the seat was supported by the ANC-Economic Freedom Fighters coalition block that saw 180 councillors voting for her rise to the office. She won the race against the DA’s Nonhlanhla Sifumba, who only received 68 votes in council this afternoon.

Hundreds of Johannesburg public servants affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) have gathered in Braamfontein as they prepare to embark on a strike on Thursday afternoon. The union has been struggling to reach an agreement with the city over a wage dispute. The JMPD has warned that the M1 and M2 highways will be heavily affected by the demonstration.

In its latest leadership shakeup, the MK Party has announced that former EFF strongman Floyd Shivambu will be the party's national organiser. Making the announcement on behalf of party president Jacob Zuma, MKP secretary-general Sifiso Maseko said: "The MK Party will be led by the national high command, which will be the highest [decision-making] body comprising eight officials.” The announcement was made at a media briefing in Sandton earlier today.
