Residents of Swellendam took to the streets and blocked the N2 over a stand-off with the local municipality after a meeting last night ended with a 24 hour shutdown being announced. The municipality has experienced incidents of arson and the destruction of public property over the past month. Officials have called for law enforcement to apprehend those responsible. The residents have raised grievances surrounding the indigent register, access to pensioners rebates, and the additional levies the community has to pay to receive services.
