Our salaries continue to shrink, while the cost of living increases. BankServe Africa’s Take-home Pay Index shows the average take-home pay spiralled downwards in April 2023, reversing recent gains, and dipping again below the level of a year ago. It also shows the number of salary payments has fallen as the economy continues to shed jobs in some industries. The average nominal take-home pay was R14,534, a significant drop from  R15,170 in the same period last year. Independent economist, Elize Kruger says the decline is also in real time as inflation remains at elevated levels, further eroding the purchasing power of average salaries.

It is World No-Tobacco Day. The day is used to raise awareness about the harm cause by tobacco products to people, public health, communities and the environment. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Health was briefed on the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill earlier today. Among other things, the aim of the bill is to regulate the sale and advertising of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems; the packaging and appearance of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems. The tobacco industry has raised concerns about misconceptions around what the bill seeks to do and the fear mongering messaging that has been shared by some on social media. It is common knowledge that residents near mines are often ignored. To change this narrative, Impala Rustenburg recently handed over four significant Social and Labour Plan projects to the North West Departments of Health and Education. These projects, which were undertaken at an investment of over R53 million, are aimed at providing lasting benefits to the residents in Impala’s mine-communities. The four projects collectively created more than 550 jobs and 115 small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) benefitted during their construction.

Auditor General Tsakane Maluleke is calling on government to urgently build a culture of accountability to improve the state of local governance and service delivery in municipalities. She says many municipalities are failing on almost every metric of good governance and integrity and local governance is characterised by a crumbling municipal infrastructure and financial mismanagement. She presented her consolidated general report on the local government audit outcomes for the financial year 2021/2022. Only 38 municipalities out of 257 achieved clean audits and municipalities racked up R4.74 billion in fruitless and wasteful expenditure and R25 billion in unauthorised expenditure.
