The Save South Africa Civic Movement is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently reinstate the death penalty in order to arrest the scourge of gender-based violence in communities. This they argue would serve as a powerful deterrent. However, most of you will recall that the death penalty was abolished in 1995 and was declared unconstitutional as it violated the 1994 constitution. The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ordered Patriotic Alliance’s suspended deputy president Kenny Kunene to apologise to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema for calling him a “cockroach”. The court has ruled that the word “cockroach” has harmful connotations to it and is internationally recognised as hateful of those to whom it is directed. The EFF has welcomed the ruling, also adding that “it is pleased that this judgment will restrain vulgar individuals from bringing tendencies and attitudes learnt in prison into the political arena”.
