Let’s now focus on this year’s Festive Season Road Safety Campaign. Yesterday, the department of transport launched the 2022 Road Safety Arrive Alive Campaign under the theme “It Starts with You”. According to transport minister Fikile Mbalula, more than 90% of road traffic crashes can be directly attributed to the human element, which invariably relate to violation of traffic rules. Mbalula says road users must change their behaviour and attitude so that we can reduce carnage on our roads by 25% by 31 March 2024.

Afrosoul singer, Brenda Mntambo is back on stage, as she celebrates 10 years of her music career. The MMA and SAMA nominee started singing at a young age and joined South Africa’s biggest gospel choir, Joyous Celebration and went on to work with artists like Lira, Judith Sephuma and Brian Thusi before releasing her first album called ‘Inspired’ in 2013. Today we dissect the politics of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal. The province will send the biggest delegation to the ANC Elective Conference, which is due to commence next week Friday. However, it is no secret that ANC branches in KwaZulu-Natal are split between those supporting Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, former health minister Zweli Mkhize and those in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa retaining the leadership of the party. This despite the provincial executive committee having publicly endorsed Mkhize as its preferred candidate to go up against President Ramaphosa for the presidency of the party. The B97 taxi route between Belville and Paarl in Cape Town has been reopened after 18 months of negotiations among taxi associations. The route was shut down following a violent dipute that claimed 83 lives. Its closure affected many communities including Gugulethu, Dunoon, Atlantis as well as Worcester and Ceres. An agreement has been signed between CATA Boland Taxi Association and the Paarl Alliance Taxi Association. Both taxi associations now have rights to use the route.

How far is the bid to get an additional public holiday this December? Fedusa wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa in October requesting an additional holiday because Christmas Day will be on a Sunday this year. According to the Public Holidays Act, “whenever any public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday.” Consequently, Monday 26 December 2022, the Day of Goodwill, will then be deemed to fall outside of the ambit of the Public Holidays Act. Earlier on today, Eskom announced that it will implement stage 6 load-shedding from 12:00 (noon) until further notice. The power utility said this is due to a high number of breakdowns since midnight, and the need to strictly preserve the remaining emergency generation reserves.
