Following Tania Campbell’s recent announcement that the City of eKurhuleni has approved 47 independent power producers that will connect directly to the City’s electricity grid to offset the effects of load shedding. The ANC in the region has reacted angrily to this, reminding the mayor that the approval of the IPPs was because of the ANC led coalition which speared the finalisation of the entire process of awarding and contracting. The party is also accusing the mayor of trying to create ‘some imaginary and non-existing legacy for herself’.

Earlier today Correctional Services announced that former President Jacob Zuma has been released from its system. Zuma was granted medical parole last year by former National Commissioner for Correctional Services, Arthur Fraser against the advice of the medial parole board. What transpired afterwards, Judge Elias Matojane ruled that Zuma should return to jail after an application by the Helen Suzman Foundation and the DA. However, Zuma and Correctional Services opposed the motion which is currently before the Supreme Court of Appeal.

However, Mabe is no novice when it comes to financial management, as he was the treasurer general of the ANC Youth League under Julius Malema. Debating students from the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria will battle it out tomorrow on the Great Debate, hosted by SAFM’s Oliver Dickson on his show, This Week, Today. The topic is ‘In South Africa there is one police officer for every 408 citizens, while the United Nations recommends one police officer for every 220 citizens. Should we Nationalize private security into the South African Police Service?’ We spoke to the debating team from the University of Johannesburg yesterday and they seem ready. It never rains, but pours in the healthcare system. The South African Medical Association has raised concern about the shortage of healthcare workers in the South African healthcare system. It says based on the number of registered doctors with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa, there are 0.8 doctors per one thousand patients. However, it says that number is just based on practitioners who are registered with the council, many of whom have emigrated for greener pastures. This means, we could have even way less doctors. At the same time, many young doctors have struggled with placement into the healthcare system after university. The World Health Organisation prescribes 1 doctor per 1000 patients. Where is the disconnect and how can it be fixed?

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha has reshuffled his provincial executive council with three MECs being chopped. Florence Radzilani, the former executive mayor of the Vhembe municipality in Limpopo, who was implicated in the VBS scandal, is now the new MEC for Transport and Community Safety.
