News24 has launched a crime initiative, CrimeCheck, which has named the Mpisi police precinct in the Eastern Cape as the safest place in the country. CrimeCheck provides a gauge of risk on a series of crime indices as well as on several individual crimes like murder and burglary. Cape Town Central had the highest rate of crime out of more than 900 precincts. Crime Check has used official crime statistic records from 1 158 policing precincts, between 2017 to 2022. The rate of crime is calculated per 1 000 people in a police precinct or 1 000 households in a precinct. We are now joined by Andrew Trench, Independent Editor and Consultant for CrimeCheck

Also speaking during the SACP’s 15th Conference,  President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the ruling party is considering the establishment of a second state-owned power utility to reduce the risk posed by Eskom's failings. The Western Cape Government wants to take off the running of police in the province. The department of community safety and police oversight says it has lost its confidence in national government’s ability to deal with crime, especially after recent attacks in taverns in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. It says it has mechanisms to make the South African Police Service efficient and reduce deadly attacks.
