At least 21 people were killed over the weekend as gunmen opened fire on three taverns in South Africa. The shootings further highlighted concerns about safety. Reacting to the Soweto shooting incident, Gauteng Liquor Board says they may consider amending certain existing laws to compel tavern owners to have security personnel at their liquor establishments in order to enhance the safety of patrons.

Earlier today, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Mr Kwazi Mshengu revealed that a report from an independent panel found that racism at Grosvenor Girls High School in Durban is systematic and structural. An independent panel was appointed in March this year to probe racism allegations, and financial misconduct after protests broke out at the school. Presenting the findings today, Mshengu said the report mentions several instances where the principal used derogatory and discriminatory language when dealing with students and employees. Joining us to outline the findings of the report is…..

Public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan was heckled by attendees at a public lecture at Wits University. Gordhan was speaking about the reform of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) at the event hosted by the Wits School of Governance as part of the university’s centenary celebrations. The session was then halted after audience members shouted at the minister saying that he is failing SOE’s. Earlier today, Equal Education members in Gauteng staged a protest against Minister Motshekga’s proposal to remove deadlines to fix schools from the infrastructure law. The trade union has also picked 24 August as a tentative date for a one-day national strike in response to numerous issues affecting the working class.

Trucks blocked roads in protest against the rising cost of fuel and poor service this morning in Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal. The N2 and R34 outside of Richard's Bay were cleared this morning. However, roads have still been blocked as The N4 between Mbombela and Maputo. On average, 1500 trucks travel between Mbombela and Maputo daily and delays could cost operators up to R234 million per day. Today marks a year since former President Jacob Zuma turned himself into the Estcourt Correctional Centre to begin his 15 month sentence. The former president was first charged for being in contempt of court when he did not take the stand at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture. The former president's arrest sparked days of violent protests across KZN and parts of Gauteng which would become known as the #JulyUnrest. It also led to racially motivated violence between Indians and Blacks in the province. A year later, the former president is on medical parole.
