Many have pointed to an alcohol issue in South Africa following the death of teenagers at a tavern in East London this past weekend. But is alcohol really the problem? The Royal House of Mandela is calling for the shutdown of taverns and a ban on alcohol following the tragedy. Inkosi Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela says alcohol exacerbates social ills and the Enyobeni tragedy is one example. He’s calling for civil society and faith based organisations to join him in the call for the ban of alcohol.

The issue of Zimbabwean Exemption permits is back on the spotlight again, as we head towards their expiry in six months. These permits were introduced as a way to regularise the status of people from Zimbabwe who fled political and economic instability in 2008. The permits were set to expire last year, however, government gave permit holders a grace period to migrate to other permits. The grace period expires in December. Many still fear it is not enough time as the process takes long. About 180-thousand Zimbabweans are affected by this, but how many have started the process since the extension of the grace period and what are the challenges?

A 15 year old learner from Nombika High School in Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal has committed suicide. The learner was a sangoma and her story made headlines after she was suspended from school for wearing her sangoma cloth draping over her school uniform. The basic education department in the province intervened in the matter and the teenager was allowed back at school to write her exams. Reports of her suicide made headlines today. We are now joined by KwaZulu-Natal’s education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu.

The Constitutional Court has ruled that the switch-off of analogue television broadcasts in South Africa must be delayed to allow for more consultation. The court also found that communications minister’s decision on 28 February 2022 to set 31 March 2022 (later revised to 30 June 2022 by the high court) as the final date for analogue switch-off was unconstitutional and invalid.
