The global medical aid agency Doctors Without Borders or MSF continues to back a proposal for a waiver on intellectual property that will enable countries to produce COVID-19 vaccines and drugs on a larger scale, at lower prices. Governments met last week at the World Trade Organization to discuss the next step of the landmark waiver originally initiated by India and South Africa last October. The temporary waiver would apply to certain IP on COVID-19 medical tools and technologies until herd immunity is reached. However, a few rich nations have been blocking this life-saving proposal. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has arrested four police officers from the Public Order Policing Unit in connection with the death of Mthokozisi Ntumba. Last week, Ntumba was fatally shot by police during the WITS student protests in Braamfontein. The four officers will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Wednesday and they are facing charges of murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.
