Today I am talking to Dawn Tree, who is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who has an adult autistic son and is also a late-diagnosed ADHDer. Dawn has been practicing in psychiatry for the past 30 years. In today’s interview, we’re covering how the practice of psychiatry can help or harm autistic people, how medications are tested, used, and marketed to medical professionals, and how to find a psychiatric professional for your individual needs.

Today’s podcast is a little different. I’ve been collecting some news articles that followers sent to me last month, and now I’m going to share my thoughts with you! So, does aspartame cause autism? Do 37% percent of autistic kids outgrow their autistic traits? Or, is autism still underdiagnosed by age 16? Let’s talk about it today.

One of the ways that neurodivergent people can manage our energy levels is by ensuring that our home is sensory-friendly and matches our needs. For people with autism, it is essential that feelings of overwhelm and overload are managed. This can be really tricky in the beginning. But with some self-reflection and practice (and sometimes trial and error) it is possible to create a space that works for you.

I started the Neurodiverging podcast in 2020, right before the pandemic. It evolved into a coaching business with multiple coaches, writers, and tech support. We serve clients who are neurodivergent or have accessibility needs. Today, I want to discuss running a business that prioritizes the accessibility needs of employees and clients.

CEO and engineer Peter Mann went through most of his life and career as an undiagnosed autistic. Now that’s he has a late autism diagnosis, he has pivoted to find new ways to support others who are neurodivergent and may not know how to tap into their abilities to succeed at work. His new mission is to advocate for autism awareness in the workplace – and help others overcome obstacles to create cool new companies, products and more.
I had a lovely, warm conversation with Peter about what needs to change in the workplace for autistic people to be able to use their strengths, what parenting was like for him as an undiagnosed father, his favorite anxiety coping strategies, and how our understanding of autism has changed in the past twenty years. Also, we briefly talk about how low-cost air purifiers are an important piece of health justice as global warming becomes a growing issue, so that’s in here too!
