In this episode of the Neutral Ground Podcast, I'm going to start a three-part series where we take a more in-depth look into the three traits that I believe are at the heart of Neomodernism today. For this first episode of the series, we're going to take a look at our need for narrative reassurance. Postmodernism took away much of our assurance in narratives. However, think about this for a moment. How important have narratives been to the evolution of the human species, to the ways in which we organize our lives? It isn't just story that does this; it is the assurances that great stories give us. We learn from the rage of Achilles; we understand obsession when we read of Captain Ahab's pursuit of Moby Dick; we know what manipulation looks like when we read about the horrible Iago in Shakespeare's Othello. There are thousands of stories that come from literally all over this wonderful planet, and we need to get back to reading them, telling them, and building more. In this episode, I'm going to talk about what we're lacking in Neomodernism today, and why narrative reassurance is so important for our mental and social health.

This is the last episode for our mini series on historical movements. We've finally arrived at the movement of today: Neomodernism. What is it? What does it mean? We've got a lot of ground to cover here. By the end of this episode, my hope is that you walk away with a better understanding of how we arrived at our current cultural climate. We'll take a look at early Neomodern critics such as Habermas, and we'll talk about the role that the Marvel Cinematic Universe--particularly Iron Man and Captain America--played in the emergence of Neomodernism. There is anger, frustration, and contention all around us. That's true. However, there is also great possibility for finding meaning, for learning how to carve out sacred space from which we can learn how to become the best version of ourselves. More than anything, there is great hope in the emergence of humanity. We just need to see it and organize it. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Does your humor have a line that you won't cross? In this episode, we're going to talk about the pop cultural side of Postmodernism. We'll discuss I Love Lucy, Nat King Cole, Family Guy, South Park, and I'll relay a true story about a woman who I tried to console in a modern museum of art who was crying in front of a particular exhibit. There is so much amazing content that was created during postmodernism, it is clearly a force to be reckoned with. Many of us grew up on things like Saturday-morning cartoons, action hero movies, and stand up comedy. So, what do we do with all of that now that we're in a new historical movement? That's part of the question we're going to think about in this episode.

In this episode, we leave the Modernist world behind and enter into Postmodernism. Postmodernism can be a difficult concept to define because built within it's definition is that it's skeptical of definitions. We're going to take a look at postmodern theorists like Derrida, Lacan, Lyotard and get into the weeds a bit about what postmodern theories entail. Additionally, we'll take all of this to the neutral ground to look at the positives and negatives that emerge out of postmodern theories.
