The shooting by two students at the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) high school in Highlands Ranch (a suburb of Denver) that left one student dead and eight others wounded, some seriously, predictably elicited calls for more gun control from a number of progressive Democrats. The fact that the school was located just seven miles away from Columbine High School, and that the shooting took place just three weeks after the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, was just gravy on that red meat.

On Tuesday, May 7, Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia signed HB 481, the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, into law. Under the new law, once a heartbeat has been detected — which can be as early as six weeks — most unborn infants will be recognized as a person with full constitutional rights and protections under Georgia law. During hospital visits, the new law recognizes such unborn infants as an additional patient. The LIFE Act also allows pregnant mothers to collect child support in order to cover pregnancy expenses, whereas previously mothers had to wait until the child was born in order to receive child support.

After two U.S. warships sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on May 6, China’s foreign ministry complained that the ships had infringed on Chinese sovereignty. Commander Clay Doss, a spokesman for the Seventh Fleet, told the Reuters news agency that the “innocent passage” was “to challenge excessive maritime claims and preserve access to the waterways as governed by international law.”
