Folks, today is the warmest day you're getting this week. Lock it in. Temperatures are shooting into the low 70s statewide — nearly 20 degrees warmer than normal for mid-March. The spring equinox is 10 days out. And today feels like a sneak preview.

Southern New Hampshire starts around 37 degrees this morning, then rockets to 73 by mid-afternoon. That's a 36-degree swing in a few hours. Central areas wake up colder at 25 degrees but still climb to 72. Even the White Mountains hit 68. Sunshine dominates. Light southwest winds. Perfect weather for getting outside if you ask me.

But here's the thing. This warmth doesn't stick around.

As the sun sets. Tonight, clouds roll in, a slight chance of sprinkles develops after 3 A.M. — nothing heavy. Lows drop to the upper 30s statewide.

Wednesday brings the shift, a cold front sags south out of Quebec. And rain spreads across southern areas. The mountains? That's where it gets interesting, sleet and freezing rain take over as cold air locks in. Classic March setup — warm front stalls south of the border. And frozen precipitation wins up north, while highs only reach the low 50s. That's a 20-degree drop from today.

Moving on. Thursday, rain wraps up by midday. A brief warm-up tries to break through in the south before cooler air returns. Highs in the mid-50s. Friday stays seasonable — low 40s with mostly sunny skies. A weak system brings snow chances Friday night, mainly north, while saturday clears out with highs in the mid-40s. Sunday turns unsettled again with rain and snow chances increasing.

Soak up today's warmth. You won't see it again for a while.

Step outside right now and you'll feel that overcast 26 degrees. But hold on. Because today's about to surprise you. We're jumping into the mid-60s this afternoon — more than 20 degrees above normal for early March. Southwest winds are pumping warmth across the entire state.

Southern New Hampshire hits 66 degrees around 3 P.M. Those gray skies break apart, sunshine takes over. And winds gust to 30 miles an hour. Central areas see the same story — 66 degrees with midday sunshine. Even up in the White Mountains, you'll top out at 65. That's impressive for elevation.

Tonight, skies clear fast and temperatures drop hard. Southern areas fall to 34. Central New Hampshire dips to 31. Mountains settle at 34 overnight.

Tuesday? Even warmer. Southern New Hampshire climbs to 70 under sunny skies. Central areas hit 71. The mountains reach 67. This is the peak of the warm spell — But Wednesday flips the script. A backdoor cold front slides in from the northeast, bringing rain statewide. Southern areas see a 60 percent chance with highs only reaching 51. Central New Hampshire has a 70 percent chance, topping out at 50. The White Mountains get soaked — an 80 percent chance with rain likely before 11 A.M., then rain and sleet mixing in. High of 47 there.

Thursday stays messy. Rain transitions to snow as colder air crashes back in. By Thursday night, temperatures plunge to the low 20s statewide.
