July 09, 2022Episode 17: The Origins of Slavery in Dutch Colonial New Jersey
New Jersey had slavery? Yes….it did. As we’re taught in school, the first African slaves landed in Virginia in 1619. The fact that Dutch New York was the second colony to import slaves is less well known. Unlike those in Virginia—indeed, unlike those in any other North American colony—the first slaves in New Netherland were not individually owned. The Dutch West India Company, a private company largely sponsored by the Dutch government, owned and controlled the province of New Netherland, which today encompasses the states of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

From the ghost of a boy who drowned, to animals who were left behind after the closing of a jungle zoo, the legends tied to this area are quite interesting.

Jan (Juan) Rodrigues was a half-black sailor who chose to settle in what is now New York before the area was settled by the Dutch. Rodrigues is now accepted as the first immigrant to the New York/New Jersey area. Join me as I discuss his story.

In this episode, I discuss some suggestions and ideas I have for the podcast, moving forward:
Themes- examine New Jersey History through themes, with episodes based on an overall theme, such as slavery in New Jersey, Elections, Immigration, Education History, and the paranormal, etc.

Show and Tell- I am recording a lot of my segments with video now, so it would not be difficult for me to show and explain something I have, I’ve found, or something a listener has found or possesses, and ties into New Jersey History.

A “Listeners’ Stories” Series, where you record yourself talking about a certain topic, and I include it in the podcast. This can be a personal story about New Jersey History, something spooky like a paranormal experience, or maybe a presentation you’ve done for school.

Guest Speakers. This is DEFINITELY coming soon, and I am already talking with people whom I’d like to have as guest speakers. As of now, most are former students, because our existing relationship makes open discussion easy and more fluid. However, I’d really like to talk with other listeners about being guest speakers. Since I teach at a local college, I have full access to the library, the quiet rooms, and classrooms so we can keep it professional.

Class Trips- Starting this summer, I will be recording from historical locations. Unless the location can yield a full-length episode, I’ll most likely record one of my story readings from a local site. Or, make a min-episode.
