In the early church, when a new believer was baptised, sometimes they would take off old clothes before being immersed in water. This represented leaving behind their old life of ignorance and sin. Then afterwards they would put on new clothes representing who they had now become in Christ. The new outfit pictured the great change that takes place when a person trusts in Christ as Saviour and Lord. This is the change Paul is writing about in Ephesians 17-24! Paul wants us to see that becoming a Christian is life-changing in every way! He points to who we once were in contrast to who we now are in Christ, calling us to live in light of our new self!
