Nearly two dozen witnesses may be called in the NYPD trial of the cop accused of using a deadly chokehold on Eric Garner, the Daily News has learned.

Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo is facing department charges for using a banned maneuver, killing Garner on a Staten Island street on July 17, 2014.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board said Thursday it plans to call 17 witnesses to the stand in Police Headquarters, with another 33 possible. Lawyers for Pantaleo said they intend to call 22 witnesses.

If that happens, the trial, set to begin in May, could be one of the longest departmental trials in history. The judge, Rosemary Maldonado can cut the list down to police officers only, and eliminate the civilians.

34 days into a government shutdown, is compromise in the works, the conflict with Venezuela's president heats up and its 2 minutes to midnight. The Doomsday Clock, a feature of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has the world closer to nuclear war since 1953 when the Soviet Union exploded its first H-Bomb. Prof. Robert Rosen is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Chicago and a director of the Argonne National Laboratory. He spoke of the existential threat to humanity by both nuclear weapons and climate change.

January 15 marked what would have been Martin Luther King's 90th birthday. And for many Americans, the day is a time to reflect on his legacy and to hope for advances in racial equality to come. Yet. the iconic civil rights leader's memory is also linked to his assassination by a single gunshot at the Lorraine motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th, 1968.

An assassination once thought settled with the arrest, conviction, escape and re-arrest of his alleged killer James Earl Ray. Ray died in prison in 1998.

After confessing to the crime and being sentenced to life he recanted and maintained until his death that he was a pawn an not an assassin.

It may not have been an important statement, but for the fact that members of the King family came to agree that someone else had killed Martin Luther King Jr.

The southern African nation of Zimbabwe has been rocked by protests against a dramatic rise in fuel prices. Gasoline in the country is now the world's most expensive. And since last week Zimbabweans have heeded a nationwide call to stay at home in protest.

The resistance is fueled by social media. On Friday the government responded with a "total Internet shutdown" for most of the day. Critics say it's an attempt to hide reports of violent crackdowns against the protesters. Civil rights groups say at least 12 people were killed last week.

The Internet shutdown has also cut off crucial access to the electronic bank deposits that Zimbabwe's government uses to pay teachers and other public workers. Some people were staying home because they were running out of money to pay the bus fare.

Among the 600 arrested are a prominent pastor and peace activist Evan Mawarire who faces 20-years in prison for supporting the protests on social media.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa blames the opposition for the unrest. He replaced Robert Mugabe, who was forced out in 2017 claiming that Zimbabwe was now open for business.

Zvidzai Ruzvidzo is a Zimbabwean living in New York. He says the elections are a sham and that the government is rife with corruption and that is the cause of the rebellion.
