In Memory of Dr. Vic Narurkar
Last week the world of Dermatology and Aesthetic medicine lost a super star.
We are all greatly shocked and saddened by the unexpected passing of San Francisco Dermatologist, Dr. Vic Narurkar. He was a thought leader, visionary friend, colleague, educator, mentor and my dermatologist.
Dr. Narurkar touched many people. He was a bright shinning light with a vibrant personality and great passion for aesthetic medicine. He loved his work and loved his patients.
Dr. Narurkar also loved teaching and being on the cutting edge of the world of aesthetics. He was involved with many clinical trials and lectured frequently at medical meetings.
Patient safety and spreading the word about the importance of going to a Board Certified Dermatologist whose core specialty is aesthetic medicine was one of his passions.
Dr. Narurkar's favorite social media hashtag was #noposers
This podcast episode is curated from 2 live podcast interviews in 2014 and 2015.
In Part 1 we discuss Botox, the newest FDA fillers and some of latest trends in aesthetic medicine.
Dr. Narurkar shares his expertise about Botox and how it is not the same as other neurotoxins. We discuss Voluma and longer lasting fillers.
The duration of fillers in clinical trials are different from what people may experience. It's important to understand this. We talk about the different kinds of filler injections. We discuss the 3 types of fillers. HA fillers which are temporary, longer lasting fillers that cannot be dissolved and permanent fillers. *Note: Artefill is now called Bellafill.
Dr. Narurkar shares his expertise and insights about some of latest energy devices like Clear and Brilliant and the Pico Laser for brown spots.
Part 2 covers the subject of filler injection complications, treatments and rare Biofilm reactions. If you are considering fillers or have them- this episode is full of important information not to be missed.
Biofilm is an inflammatory response to fillers that are injected deeper in the skin. There is lots of confusion online and people get alarmed. Many times its non-FDA fillers injected by non-certified dermatologists or other people who do not have a medical license to practice. Allergic reactions to fillers are different from Biofilm.
Fillers are very safe but sometimes reactions can happen. What are some signs you may have an adverse filler reaction and what are the treatment options.
Dr. Vic Narurkar- you will always be in my heart!

Feeding your Skin with Healthy Habits
"Good Habits, Good Health, Skincare is Part of Your Good Health"
Secrets for Healthy Skin. Board Certified Bay Area Dermatologist Dr. Serena Mraz shares her expertise about healthy habits for healthy skin throughout your lifetime.
Taking care of your skin should be easy, not complicated. Basically cleanse, moisturize and use sun protection. Other topical products that keep your skin healthy include vitamin C serum, creams with Niacinamide and Retina- A cream. You don't need to spend lots of money on skincare products. However, going to the cosmetic counters is not the best choice. There are some well known products you can buy in drugstores such as, Oil of Olay, CeraVe Cream, Neutrogena®. and others.
If you have young children or babies it's important to use sun protection both sunblocks and protective clothing. Starting healthy habits early is your best defense. Elta MD is one of Dr. Mraz's favorite sun protection products. Sprays are good for your back or hard to reach areas, but should not be used on the face.

"People come in and they are worried about what anti-ageing products they should use and they are not cleansing properly, they are drying out their skin. You know, borrowing a few unusual circumstances, you do not need an anti-bacterial cleanser or a deodorant cleanser for your face and body. You can use something very gentle. Dove is the classic. Dove and Olay both make products that are very gentle in replenishing for the skin and strip less moisture and the minute you get out of the shower or washing, feel that skin because if you are an intact skin barrier is always going to look more useful and be more supple and soft than a non-intact barrier and you do not want to wait until your skin is chapped or itchy or irritated to start taking care of it."

The Laser Bra Lift
Are you a good candidate for an internal bra lift instead of a traditional breast lift? LA Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Stevens discusses the advantages of the Laser Bra Lift and who is the best candidate with Host, Michele Garber.
The Laser Bra is not new. Dr. Stevens has been preforming this lift since the 1990's. However, there are surgeons who believe it is nonsense. Dr. Stevens has preformed thousands of these lifts seeing excellent results lasting longer than traditional breast lifts. It is effective and safe. This is still a surgical procedure.
The Laser Bra uses a patients own skin to lift the breasts, creating an internal bra lifting your breast to give you upper pole fullness. This skin is traditionally thrown away. Imagine placing your hand under your breasts and pushing up. However, this surgery is not for everyone. You have to have enough skin in order for this technique to be effective. If example you have ptotic breasts and your nipples points down, you are a perfect candidate. Or maybe you want a lift without implants or are having your implants removed and only want a lift. You must have enough skin for this lift.
According to Dr. Stevens his laser bra lifts have a longer longevity than the traditional breast lifts. Patient's need to be aware that this lift is not scarless as some website say it is . There is a scar. Recovery time is the same as a traditional breast lift. Why don't more surgeons offer this procedure? One reason is that surgeons need a very expensive CO2 Laser in order to preform this surgery.
We talked a little about the current trend in aesthetic medicine for a more natural look across the board. Women want to look natural and more women are exchanging their large implants for smaller ones. In fact Dr. Stevens see a 60/40 split. More woman are wanting a lift without implants. These statistics use to be reversed.
What's on the horizon for plastic surgery? Maybe a scarless breast lift in the near future. Stay tuned....

Are You Demanding Enough From Your Plastic Surgeon?
Teitelbaum is guided by principles of proportion and restraint, and he produces astonishingly natural looking results.- Allure Magazine 2013
Santa Monica Board certified plastic surgeon Steven Teitelbaum, MD talks with Host, Michele Garber sharing his expertise and wisdom about why patients should be demanding more from their plastic surgeons when seeking breast augmentation.
According to Dr. Teitelbaum there have been many advances over the past 15-20 years in breast augmentation surgery that plastic surgeons are still not following. Why? Breast augmentation could be a lot safer, less revisions, less downtime and less pain.
Too many plastic surgeons don't care about how a woman will look with her implants in 4-5 years.
Dr. Teitelbaum is currently using nerve blocks for pain which gives the patient a much better recovery with significantly less pain.
Patients should be asking a lot more questions when thinking about any plastic surgery procedure.
We also talk about cup size in relationship to implant size and a patient's body. Everyone is different and when considering implants its important to have the proper measurements.
Although you may be thinking about big implants, think twice and consider that big implants can permanently cause damage to your breasts, sometimes this is irreversible. Women should be educated to understand that having 600-650cc and more is really not a wise choice. Not only does it look fake, it's unhealthy. However, there are expectations based on a woman's body type and height. Our national breast tissue was not meant to be stretched that much. Something to really think about when you are considering breast implants.
Ask your surgeon if he or she is comfortable with all types of breast implants including tear-drop shape which takes more skill.
Patient should look at evidence based literature to learn about breast augmentation not opinion based.
And we talk about a lot more...

What is the right implant for you?
New York Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Brian Cohen shares his expertise about choosing the right breast implants with host Michele Garber, The NipTuck Coach.
The trend in breast implants today is smaller and natural. According Dr. Cohen larger implants are prone to more complications.
Breast Implants are safe devices. Patients should be well informed before choosing implants and pick the right Board Certified Plastic Surgeon whose expertise is in breast augmentation.
What do most patients want? Silicone. Silicone breast implants have come a long way and are safe. They are softer and look more natural than Saline. Today Silicone Implants come in different shapes such as round, smooth or textured, and anatomic. Are you looking for more upper pole fullness, or more a tear drop shape?
Not all surgeons are comfortable with anatomic implants, there is a steeper learning curve for the surgeon and if they rotate they will look strange.
Anatomic breast implants should be "as snug as a buy in the rug," says Dr. Cohen.
Gummy Bear Implants are firmer but soft and more expensive than other implants. Gummy Bear implants are excellent for breast reconstructive patients. Sometimes the choice of implants really comes down to the dugeon’s
Saline implants are made up of salt water and if they rupture you will know right away. However, they feel firmer, can ripple and don't look as natural as Silicone. Th newest Saline Implant is called The Ideal Implant. Is it really ideal??
Do you know that Botox is being used in the breasts as well as fillers and fat transfer?
We'll also touch on the subject of risks, capsular contracture and the risks of ALCL.
