The Northern Sentinels Podcast

Last week, I had the good fortune to record a podcast with another great Canadian, Perrin Beatty. Perrin is the President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and a former federal cabinet minister for Brian Mulroney. With Mr. Mulroney’s funeral happening a few days from now, I wanted to get Perrin’s thoughts on the former Prime Minister as a eulogy for the podcast listener. Please enjoy this NSP Short on Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

On this episode, Karen McCrimmon and I sit down in her provincial MPP office to discuss her journey of service.  Karen grew up in communities across Ontario - Toronto, Timmins, and Windsor - and was active in both cadets and the Army reserves during her youth. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Windsor, she enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces and was the first women to qualify as an air navigator. She spent most of her career in air operations and hung up her flight suit after 26 years. However, her retirement didn't last long and she decided to continue to serve via politics - first as a federal MP and then as a provincial MPP. Her road to the house of commons started through local volunteering and grew to a point where she ran to be the leader of the federal Liberal Party.  There is no doubt Karen is passionate about service and taking care of her fellow citizens.

I think the vast majority of Canadians feel safe in Canada. This means defence and security of our nation, citizens, and interests is rarely discussed, even with the War in Ukraine, foreign interference, and countless other threats. How did we become so complacent? Listen to Bob Fowler's take on this issue.

On this episode, I'm joined by Calvin Chrustie. A proud Winnipeger, Cal grew up on the boundary between the right and the wrong side of the tracks. He learned a lot about grit and resilience from having a foot in both worlds. Fortunately, strong values and work ethic landed him on the good side of the law. Literally. After university, he joined the RCMP and spent the next 32 years working everything from organized crime, to UN operations, to hostage negotiations. After retiring from the Mounties, Cal started a business focused on dealing with critical risks for governments, corporations, and individuals. He is especially passionate about educating people on the threats associated with hybrid warfare.

On this episode, I visit the Ottawa Mission to speak with their CEO, Peter Tilley. Born into a military family, Peter and his siblings moved around until a tragic accident settled them in Ottawa. After high school, he graduated from Algonquin College and worked in several industries before a professional reset. He left his life as an executive to drive for the Ottawa Food Bank. He progressed from doing deliveries to the Executive Director of the food bank. During his time at the food bank is when he decided to deal with his addiction to alcohol. Clean and sober, fit and healthy, Peter has been the CEO of the Ottawa Mission for over a decade. He and his team serve the Ottawa community in a variety of ways that not only provide essential services and dignity to our citizens, but help support social stability.
