On this episode, I speak with Canada’s youngest ever chess Grand Master, Mark Bluvshtein. Mark was born in the Soviet Union and was taught the game of chess by his father. After the fall of the wall, it became difficult to afford the basics, so the family immigrated to Israel where Mark continued to develop his abilities in another very strong chess culture. After a few years in Israel, the family was on the move again and landed in Toronto when Mark was 11. Already a very high level chess player, Mark quickly established himself as one of the best in Canada and became the youngest ever Canadian chess Grand Master at 16. He continued to play chess after high school and even became a full-time chess player to see how far he could develop his abilities. Mark remains involved with the chess community in Canada and espouses many of the virtues of the game - thinking ahead, assessing risk, and dealing with the consequences of decisions.

There is no way I am watching a seven hour chess game. Not only do I not understand the game well, but few things can hold my attention for that long. I’m not alone. On this NSP Short, chess Grand Master Mark Bluvshtein breaks down the different formats and talks about the growing popularity of blitz chess.

On this episode, I kick off my expert series on national security technologies. There are a number of topics I want to profile on the show and I’m starting with cyber. My guest today is the CEO of the Canadian cyber security company, Esentire. J Paul Haynes was raised in Oakville, Ontario and spent his youth playing sports, tinkering with anything mechanical, and playing in a band. He found his way to university of Guelph where earned an engineering degree and started his business career. A serial entrepreneur, J was involved in a multitude of companies before he landed in his current job. We get into how cyber defence works and J gives an honest assessment of our vulnerabilities in Canada and what we need to do to protect ourselves and our critical infrastructure.

As with many national security issues, it’s difficult for most people to understand why they should care. Most of the language is hard to understand and rather dull to anyone but an insider. Listen to J Paul Haynes explain some of the potential impacts to our citizens from a cyber attack in language we can understand.

On this episode I welcome Dick Fadden to the show. Born and raised in the eastern townships of Quebec, Dick suffered from itchy feet and wanted to find a way to contribute from an early age. He started his career with the foreign service and had the opportunity to serve in west Africa for a couple of years. When he returned to Ottawa, he served in many of the departments with national security responsibilities - Food Inspection Agency, Citizenship and Immigration, Defence, and CSIS. He eventually became the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister. Since his retirement from government, he continues to find ways to serve through his engagement on national security issues and education to the public through various engagements.

I was unprepared for my last job in the Army. I arrived in Ottawa as a general officer with none of the experience required to represent the Army in a meaningful way. I was not alone. On this NSP Short, Dick Fadden explains why the entire military benefits with generals and admirals are more adept at navigating the bureaucracy in Ottawa.

Foreign Interference by China and other states has been an important topic of discussion in 2024. It’s clear this has been happening for many years with little response from Canada. Listen to Dick Fadden’s take on why this matters to our democracy and the need to take these threats seriously to protect our way of life.
