I have always been that person who is well-organized and driven to accomplish what I have set out to do. I was taught at a young age that work ethic was paramount for success. I am humbly thankful my father taught me this tenet. However, it is in those moments when we are taken by a force that is closer than near and sooner than now that we expand in being-ness; I experienced what is called in the Zen tradition a satori, a flash of enlightenment. The first seven days in the “Big Apple” was a dream, living in a luxury hotel in downtown Manhattan and feeling like a big shot. Once the honeymoon period was over, I had my first taste of the biting “Sour Apple.”

Do you see Monarch butterflies? In recent experience, these angelic creatures consistently reveal themselves to me in the most amazing ways. My awareness was brought to them via an incredible story I read. Dr. Wayne Dyer recounts his prophetic introduction to these mystical beings at the end of one of his inspiring books. His dear friend Jack was a huge fan of Monarch butterflies. He just loved how they had such a short life, yet lived with great presence and purpose. There is an ancient story in the Buddhist tradition that offers up a great teaching on the power of connection, or in this case, disconnection. For in order to know what you want, it is important to know what you do not want. Buddha was well-known for his ability to respond to evil with good. There was a man who knew about his reputation and he traveled miles and miles to test Buddha. When he arrived and stood before Buddha, he verbally abused him, he insulted him, and he challenged him; without letting up, he did everything he could to offend Buddha. Buddha was unmoved. He simply turned to the man and said, “May I ask you a question?” The man responded, “Well, what?” Buddha said, “If someone offers you a gift and you decline to accept it, to whom then does it belong?” The man replied, “Then it belongs to the person who offered it.” Buddha smiled, “That is correct. So if I decline to accept your abuse, does it not then still belong to you?” The man was speechless and walked away.

One of my favorite books of all time is Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, which has been translated into sixty-nine languages. It is a brilliant tale of a shepherd boy, Santiago, in search of buried treasure. He does not know what the treasure is or if he will be able to surmount the obstacle along the way. A journey that starts out seeking worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within.This truly is every person’s story. We are all out seeking to, make it, in the world. We are all trying to create a life that will fulfill our needs, wants, and desires, focused mainly on a world of form and recognition. I was this boy most of my life, until an event occurred that changed my “Personal Legend” as it is called in The Alchemist. A Personal Legend is your life’s spiritual purpose. It is a spiritual calling that awakens a deep desire and passion to live with a sense of purpose for something greater than yourself.
