In Lk 9:23, Jesus says, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (NASB). The glory of the cross that leads men to inherit eternal life, also leads to a slow painful death to self in this age. As offensive as it may be to the human mind, a willingness to die to ourselves and submit to God’s purposes in bringing difficulty to our lives is necessary if the gospel is to be faithfully represented in the church and to the world. To deny the call to share in the Messiah’s sufferings in this age is to distort the gospel, and to distort the gospel is to hinder its advance. In this session Caleb will discuss one of the crucial steps we must take to ensure that our lives don’t become a stumbling block to the gospel: Coming to terms with the cost of discipleship.
