In the next 18 months, Hollywood is going to pump out an unprecedented number of tv shows and movies that are based on existing properties. Be they sequels, prequels, reboots, remakes, reintroductions or adaptations, the cynical entertainment consumer would probably rehash this old line:

"There are no original ideas in Hollywood anymore!"

They wouldn't be wrong but truly original stories and ideas probably ran dry a few thousand years ago and everything we've seen since the dawn of film is a remake or reboot of something. However that's another podcast for another day.

Today, Chemma and I are opening our own studio (PC Culture Entertainment) but the catch is, we only use existing, known properties to make our movies, tv shows, albums, etc.

Listen in as we do some gender-flipping, end white-washing, and bring back some classic punk and hip-hop standards to a new generation.

In this part of our discussion on Netflix's cyberpunk cop show, we avoid getting into spoiler territory and talk about some of the overarching ideas about the future and motifs that serve as the basis for the show.

On the heels of the Oscars comes the most important awards show in all of low-level podcasting:

The Woodies!

Every 4 years, or whenever we remember to do it, we award some deserving and undeserving pieces of media and stories from more recent times the coveted Woodie Award. Which, to my knowledge, does not have any particular physical form and that's okay, because these awards have little-to-no structure but they are lots of fun.

The glitz! The glamor! The social justice issues and equality messages!

It's Oscars time, baby!

Chemma and I discuss the importance of THE marquee entertainment awards show: whether or not they got things right, if it needs some kind of overhaul, how much the outside world influences who wins what and of course the biggest, burning question:

So it's been another shitty week(+) in America. Why not take your mind off some of the shittiness with a nostalgic sports, music and uniform talk?

Chemma and I discuss the fun and perhaps the necessity of the various sports' all star games, what could be done to improve the experience and if we have any notable all star memories.

Here at The Occasionalists we like to think we're a collection of pretty smart people. Some might argue to the contrary but at the bare minimum I think we do an excellent job of keeping our weekly discourse above the facile yelling of your typical cable news program. That's something, right?

Every now and then we take a stab at sounding super-duper intelligent and thus far, I think it's worked out pretty well. Some recent examples:

These episodes fit a particular profile that Chemma and I talk about off the air quite a bit and it can be summed up thusly: "where is humanity going and what is driving us there?"

I'm calling it The Protean Man Series. There's a deeper meaning to that which we will touch on in the next episode as it's a little too wieldy to unpack via text.

In the spirit of that idea we take a deep look at...THE FUTURE! (If you didn't say it with a 1950s tv announcer voice, I'm disappointed in you.)

Chemma and I venture into three separate times and make some predictions and have a discussion about what has changed and what has persisted.

First we travel to 2048, our near future and a time many of us will be living in. Then we discuss 2118, a near future for what currently constitutes humanity though us rascally millennials will likely have faded from history. Finally we end in 3018, far enough out that humanity might be unrecognizable.
