In this episode of the Okami Kai Chronicles, Scott Campsall sits down with martial artist, actor, and stunt performer Alain Moussi for a wide-ranging conversation about martial arts, training, teaching, performance, and the mindset required to keep improving.
Alain may be best known for his work in film and stunt performance, but throughout this conversation one thing becomes very clear: he is a martial artist first.
Scott and Alain talk about how his training has benefitted him both professionally and personally and why it still is so important to him.
The conversation also offers a glimpse of what students can expect when Alain comes to Okami Kai Martial Arts and Fitness in Uxbridge, Ontario, on October 3 for a special training experience.
Whether you are new to martial arts, a long-time practitioner, an instructor, or simply interested in the mindset behind high-level performance, there is plenty here to think about.

Sometimes the plan falls through.
A coach or instructor moves on, a training partner disappears, motivation dries up, and the thing you were counting on is suddenly gone. This episode tells one of history's most dramatic stories of an army stripped of its leadership overnight, and what its unlikely new leader did next. No self-pity, no waiting for rescue, just the next step forward. Scott Campsall connects that lesson to the martial arts mats, showing how discipline, structure, and the willingness to stop making excuses can rebuild anything, one step at a time. If you've ever felt stranded without a map, this episode is for you.

This is all about a beaver...and you.
Scott Campsall talks about a relative who had a beaver who built a dam, flooded the land, and took out a road. No matter how many times the dam got torn apart by hand, it came back. The only thing that slowed it down, even temporarily, was dynamite.
This episode is built around that story and what the beaver was actually demonstrating the entire time: that the people who outlast everyone else aren't doing anything dramatic. They just keep picking up the next stick.
We cover why motivation is one of the least reliable tools you have, why the problem you think you're solving is rarely the real problem, what children absorb from watching adults persist, and how to start again without starting from zero.

You're training hard, eating reasonably well, and showing up consistently. So why does progress feel slower than it should? Why does recovery take longer than it used to? Why do you feel like you're running at 80 percent no matter what you do?
The answer might be happening while you're unconscious.
In 1942, the average person slept 7.9 hours a night. Today it's closer to 6.5. That missing 90 minutes isn't just making you tired. It's quietly working against every training session you put in, every technique you're trying to learn, and every adaptation your body is trying to make.
In this episode, we dig into the science of sleep and what it actually means for anyone who trains martial arts, attends fitness classes, or is raising kids who do. We cover why sleep is where your training gets processed, not just where you rest. We talk about the hormonal repair window that most people are cutting short without realizing it, why your evening habits are sending your biology the wrong signals, and what the research actually says about caffeine, alcohol, light, temperature, and the mind that won't stop spinning at midnight.
No vague wellness advice. No supplements to buy. Just the mechanisms, the evidence, and a handful of specific things you can change tonight.
This episode is for anyone who has quietly accepted being tired as just part of life.
It doesn't have to be.

There's no shortcut. Not in martial arts, not in fitness, not in parenting, and not in life. In this episode, Scott Campsall shares a deceptively simple idea he brought back from the Elevate Studio Growth Summit in Florida that applies far beyond the dojo.
We dig into the neuroscience of why repetition is the only mechanism that actually builds skill, why waiting for motivation is a trap your brain sets for you, and what it really means when your child says they want to quit. Whether you're an adult who keeps restarting, or a parent trying to figure out how hard to push, this episode offers something concrete to hold onto.

Every situation has two handles.
One makes the burden heavier. The other makes it manageable.
In this episode of The Okami Kai Chronicles, we explore an idea from the Stoic teacher Epictetus known as “the two handles.” He had an insight that every experience can be approached in different ways. One way leads to resentment and frustration. The other allows us to carry the same weight with more clarity and resilience.
Modern research on gratitude is beginning to explain why this ancient idea still matters. Studies suggest that practicing gratitude can improve mental health, sleep, relationships, and even aspects of physical health by helping regulate the nervous system and reduce the effects of chronic stress.
In this episode we discuss:
• Why gratitude has a “branding problem”
• What science suggests about gratitude and the nervous system
• The Stoic idea of the two handles
• How parents can help children through difficult moments in training
• How adults can reset themselves during frustration
• Simple daily practices that build resilience
Because sometimes the most important change is not what we are carrying.
It is how we carry it.

Why do some kids thrive while others struggle to focus, listen, or stay motivated?
In this episode, Scott sits down with Melody Johnson, Founder and CEO of SKILLZ Worldwide, to uncover the psychology behind how children learn and why traditional “one-size-fits-all” teaching doesn’t always work.
Melody has spent decades studying how martial arts can help children develop not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Together, she and Scott explore how the SKILLZ system combines martial arts, neuroscience, and child development to create better learners on and off the mats.
You’ll also hear how Okami Kai Martial Arts & Fitness has found success in the “grey area,” blending traditional martial arts discipline with SKILLZ-inspired methods to help students of all ages grow.
In the second half, Melody tackles real-world parenting scenarios and shares practical advice you can use at home right away.
Whether you’re a parent, coach, teacher, or instructor, this episode will change how you see your child’s learning, motivation, and mindset.
