On Christmas Eve, Catbaloo and Old Mrs. Moody prepare their home for the holiday. They bring in a Christmas tree, but when their kitten, Little Wilbur, breaks most of the ornaments, the tree is left nearly bare.
As the evening goes on, friends begin stopping by to wish them a merry Christmas. Each brings something small and beautiful to hang on the tree, filling the house with warmth and company.
By the end of the night, the tree—and the evening—are quietly transformed.

When they bring out a pair of binoculars to take a closer look, they see him carrying raspberries from the garden into the hollow of the sugartree.
Curious, Catbaloo climbs a ladder to peek inside the tree. What she finds there makes sense of it all—and draws Old Mrs. Moody up the ladder to see for herself.

Old Mrs. Moody and Catbaloo head to Possum Creek for a campout. They hike through the woods and learn to spot animal tracks, then paddle out onto the lake to do a little fishing. After a day of adventures, they gather around a cozy campfire and toast marshmallows for s'mores.
Later that night, tucked into a tent under the stars, they lie very still and listen. The sounds of the forest come together and sing a gentle lullaby for the baby animals—quiet, peaceful, and full of wonder.

It's a perfectly wonderful day until a little stray dog steals a salami from Old Mrs. Moody's picnic basket. When Catbaloo catches him, they discover he has no name and no family. Without hesitation, they welcome him in and love him as their own.

Roylene the little pig has a big imagination. On Uncle Henry's farm, she decides the barnyard should become the African veldt.
Soon the cats are roaring like lions, the goats are stretching their necks like giraffes, and the ducks are standing on one leg like flamingos. The farm is quickly thrown into confusion.
Old Mrs. Moody and Catbaloo come up with a plan to help restore order. They take Roylene on a visit to the zoo, where she comes to understand the difference between wild places and home.
