  • TFR 76: Matilda
We continue our series of tributes to the films of 1996 with a childhood favorite for anyone who's ever been a child: Matilda!

We speak from two perspectives: one who grew up with the film (Albert) and one who avoid seeing out of love for the book (Austin). From Danny DeVito's brilliant dynamic camerawork, to Mara Wilson's most iconic performance, we take a look at what makes this classic tale of overcoming trauma such a masterpiece.

  • TFR 73: Marvel #4 (2015-2016)
Hello and welcome to part 4 of our ongoing State of Marvel series!

This time we pick up where we left off as we discuss Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and the BIG one, Captain America: Civil War. We mostly talk Civil War, to be completely honest. Does it hold up to the rest of the universe? Who's right, Cap or Tony? How does it hold up against the other big Vs film this year? (Oh yeah, we go there.) So pick a side and join us for Marvel #4!

SPOILER WARNING: Full spoilers for Civil War, obviously. The others we just scratch the surface, so those are safe.

We don't into the Doctor Strange Ancient One controversy, not because we don't care or don't want to talk about it, but because we want to point you towards people who will do it more justice than a couple of white guys talking about it. To that end, go listen to Nerds of Color podcast episode #047: #WhiteWashedOUT with Friends of the Show Shaun (from No, Totally!) and Lexi Alexander!

  • TFR 72: Trek Record (TNG)
Space. The Final Frontier. Well, next to the final frontier. Sort of the second frontier, really. Welcome to our first cast on the Star Trek films!

This week we focus on the mostly miss, but at least one hit Next Gen films, which are Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, respectively. What, you say? What about the original six Trek films? Well not to worry, WE WILL get to those by the end of the year!

Why start with the Next Generation films, you also ask (you're very questiony today)? Well, the Trek films have a very interesting track record which is well worth studying, but none more than the Next Generation films. They are films based on arguably the most beloved series in the franchise (emphasis on arguably), yet the films as a whole are.. underwhelming to say the least. Join us as we dive into what makes the Next Gen property tick, and why the films based on it are just so-so.

By the way if you're wondering which of the films we liked (a lot in fact), it's this one:

  • TFR 71: Differing Opinions
As you all know, we have opinions! But sometimes those opinions change and that's okay, nay, healthy! This week we take a hard look at our history of watching films to see if there are any that we've changed our minds on as we've grown a bit, positive or negative. Also why do we change our minds on things we used to like or hate? Join us as we delve into the mystery and clear some cobwebs.

WARNING: There be Game of Thrones spoilers! If you wish to skip them, they run from 55:44 to 57:16

  • TFR 70: Tornado Alley

    A staaawwwm's comin'.

This week we head for the basement as we talk the 1996 summer hit (for some reason) Twister. What, you haven't thought about this movie for a while? Yeah, neither have we. Sometimes a movie comes along that explodes in the public consciousness just long enough to be forgotten in a few years. Sure everyone remembers it, but only in the context of the time it was released, like a top 40 hit song or a specialty soda. So join us as we attempt to retread the path of a tornado filled with bad CG and worse dialogue.
