Today I wanted to talk about the neccessary darkness in us that must balance out our good. Like yin-yan. Good and bad are not diementrically opposed views, instead that are both needed to be a whole human.

Zeno of Citium (he lived around 336 – 265 B.C/B.C.E) was the founder of the Stoic School of philosophy in Athens. The philosophy taught that the Logos (Universal Reason) was the greatest good in life.

Wheb we live in accordance with universal reason, we are truly living a worthwhile existence. Later stoicism would be further developed by Epictetus (50-130 A.D/C.E.) and others like, Seneca the Younger (Lucius Annaeus Seneca) or just Seneca (c. 4 BC – AD 65), and most notably Marcus Aurelius (121-180 A.D./C.E.). Eventually Stoicism would become one of the most popular and influential philosophies in the Roman world. That's enough history for now.

The thing to remember is that you're not alone. All you have do is confide in someone and share your burden, as long as they are willing to help you carry it.

If you do not already know, Seneca he lived around 4 BC – AD 65. (His full name is: Lucius Annaeus Seneca, you may also know him as Seneca the Younger) He was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and all around renaissance man. He has some awesome plays and amazing letters. we will be hearing more from him I promise.

Today we spoke a bit about a new book I purchased, then we got in not the Epictetus quote. The idea of getting happiness from internal instead of external sources is a common theme in stoicism. And one come come back to often.

In case you didn't know, Epictetus was a Stoic who was prominent in the early second century B.C./C.E. (which was about four hundred years after Zeno.)

When I was recording, when I referred to Epictetus, I got Epicurious and Zeno mixed in all into one. However zeno was the founder of the stoic idea, not Epictetus. Also Epicurious is another philosophy altogether.
