Computers have been the driving force behind the progress of mankind, we have transitioned from room-size computers to the mobile revolution "computer in the pocket". As of 2022, the largest transistor count in a commercially available microprocessor is 114 billion transistors,  we are at quasi-7 nanometer chips while  @IBM Technology  is working on 2 nm chip technology......is there a limit to Moores Law because the quantum effect will start kicking post 1 nm. Amongst the alternative new computing architectures, the most promising seems to be "Quantum Computers" where we will transition from bits to atoms, creating computation leveraging matter, spoke to Reena Dayal on the wonderful quantum journey ahead where a man could achieve god-like powers when we have a working Quantum Computer.

Prof Ishanu Chattopadhyay heads the ZeD lab@UChicago where they investigate the core algorithmic principles behind data analysis with minimal human intervention, and little or no access to domain expertise. ZED lab is interested in unraveling complex emergent structures in biological, physical & social systems, solving hard problems in clinical decision-making, understanding the epidemiology of complex diseases, and reliably predicting rare events in complex stochastic phenomena. Prof Ishanu has developed an AI Algorithm that can forecast crimes being committed days before they actually occur. The AI model was tested across eight cities in the US and predicts future crimes with 80 to 90 percent accuracy, without falling foul of bias.

Prof Ishanu's research focuses on the theory of unsupervised machine learning and the interplay of stochastic processes and formal language theory in exploring the mathematical underpinnings of the question of inferring causality from data. His most visible contributions include the algorithms for data smashing, inverse Gillespie inference, and nonparametric nonlinear and zero-knowledge implementations of Granger causal analysis that have crucial implications for biomedical informatics, data-enabled discovery in biomedicine, and personalized precision health care. His current work focuses on analyzing massive clinical databases of disparate variables to distill patterns indicative of hitherto unknown etiologies, dependencies, and relationships, potentially addressing the daunting computational challenge of scale and making way for ab initio and de novo modeling in an age of ubiquitous data. Chattopadhyay received an MS and PhD in mechanical engineering, as well as an MA in mathematics, from the Pennsylvania State University. He completed his postdoctoral training and served as a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State. He also held a postdoctoral fellowship simultaneously at the Department of Computer Science and the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University.

Neuromorphic computing is a method of computer engineering in which elements of a computer are modeled after systems in the human brain and nervous system. The term refers to the design of both hardware and software computing elements.  Neuromorphic engineers draw from several disciplines -- including computer science, biology, mathematics, electronic engineering and physics -- to create artificial neural systems inspired by biological structures.

There are two overarching goals of neuromorphic computing (sometimes called neuromorphic engineering). The first is to create a device that can learn, retain information and even make logical deductions the way a human brain can -- a cognition machine. The second goal is to acquire new information -- and perhaps prove a rational theory -- about how the human brain works. Prof Shubham Sahay is the head of the NeuroComputing and Hardware Security (NeuroCHaSe) research group at  @IIT Kanpur  & they are working on the development of (a) novel hardware platforms to perform energy-efficient computation and (b) novel hardware security primitives to protect the cyber-physical systems against security vulnerabilities and adversary attacks.

The research thrust is highly interdisciplinary in nature and exploits principles and knowledge accumulated from semiconductor device physics, VLSI circuit design, computational neuroscience, Machine learning, etc., involving both experimental characterization and theoretical work.

Researchers from the University of Oxford -Michael Cohen, Mike Osborne & Marcus Hutter from the Australian National University have co-authored a paper that cautions on AI Destroying Mankind. Will AI Destroy Humanity? Michael K cohen is studying a DPhil in Engineering Science with Mike Osborne at  @University of Oxford   His research considers the expected behavior of generally intelligent artificial agents & he is interested in designing agents that we can expect to behave safely.

Michael started studying AI safety after readying Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence and became convinced that the default outcome of creating an agent smarter than we are is the extinction of biological life. he got a master's in computer science with Marcus Hutter at the Australian National University. Having studied the actual math behind general intelligence since then, this has remained a major concern of his: as of 2019, from a handful of published algorithms for general intelligence that exist (but are too slow to run), every one of them would attempt to gain arbitrary power over humans. There is little reason to think that fast approximations of these algorithms will be safe by default. Michael along with Mike Osborne from #oxforduniversity & Marcus Hutter from  @Google  's  @DeepMind  has co-authored a paper titled " Advanced artificial agents intervene in the provision of reward" which posits that #artificialintelligence will most likely destroy humanity if it comes in way of its programmed reward systems.
