I'm excited to talk about this, it's so timely right now and something that's been super irritating for me especially loving you guys, loving this community and wanting to make sure everybody is doing everything they can to build as much income as they can. When I find out that somebody's account has been shut down, that's such a heartbreaking moment, I don't ever want that. Cynthia what is your story? How did you even get started in this?

Cynthia:

I was a business consultant for many years and over twenty five I … A long time and I actually started selling on Amazon in 2010 because I needed extra income which is why a lot of people do it. I had ten hours a week to do it. I had no time and this turned out to be the perfect business for somebody who had no time and I only needed about fifteen hundred a month, it wasn't like I was going to build an empire at the time; I just needed a little extra money. That's how I got started in 2010 and I had so many people say, “Well, how's that Amazon thing doing?” Also wanted me to talk about it that I wrote a book about it in 2011, came out early 2012 and that was my Make Thousands on Amazon in 10 Hours a Week. Because of that book, it all led one thing to another, I did a little of consulting. People would hire me and they'd say, “Hey, tell me why I'm not making money here?” Or, “Why isn't this product selling?” Stuff like that.

In 2014, what happened was I started to get people who were suspended saying, “Can you get me reinstated?” I thought, “Well, I definitely will try.” I had not done it before but I just dived into it as a business consultant , I do understand a lot of … I can read a contract for example … I understand a lot of these things. I know how businesses get in trouble and I know how they get out. I used to do turn around work and I've got crisis...

– Amazon seems to be saying that they suddenly need a very expensive UPC code and that they have to have permission from the manufacturer/rights holder in order to do it.

– What Amazon is doing now is automatically checking Product IDs against the GS1 database. So if you are selling a product where you have added a UPC code that you purchased from eBay or some online dealer, basically, it won’t show up in the GS1 database as belonging to you or any other brand.

– If this product is YOURS – a private label or manufacturer – you’re fine because you can register these with Amazon or even ask for an exception to have a barcode. In fact, they will give you a universal number for your unique products through the brand registry so you can sell them worldwide on Amazon’s platforms under that one number.

In conclusion Amazon shifting things is not necessarily a bad thing. It show the massive value that can come from the Drop shipping mode, wholesaling and private labeling.

As I talked to you guys before, this really is a subject that's needed within our community. It's something not a lot of people are talking about, which I find really irritating as I'm wanting to go out and do stuff with my Amazon brands and just kind of the private-label industry. I'm finding that there's a huge gap in the market. Whether it's PPC or even driving people to your site and making sure that you're keywording correctly, there's not a whole lot out there and when it is out there, you have to be a genius to go through it.

I'm really excited because we have these guys on, Brian and Brian. I'm going to refer to them as their last names because it would get a little confusing to go through it. You guys, introduce yourself. Brian Burt, introduce yourself first. We'll do that. It's a little easier that way.

Yeah, sure, Josh. Thanks for having me on. This is fun, man, now that we've got the audio situated. I'm not using my big microphone anymore. Pushed that guy away. Yeah, my name is Brian Burt. I've been an online seller for almost 10 years. I've been in the Amazon game for just over a year and in that time I was able to grow from about 0, well exactly 0, to over $150,000 a month and that's going up quite a bit. I have a goal: a million dollars a month. I'll show you my whiteboard at another time, but it's on there. The one thing that was holding me back here was really my sponsored product campaigns. I had no idea, just like you mentioned, what was going on. That's how I found Brian Johnson.

Okay, so I'm Brian Johnson. My background is actually I've been in e-commerce for probably about a decade. Part of that was eBay. I did pretty good as far as selling office and banking equipment and that kind of stuff on eBay. Then I got pulled over to the Amazon side of the house about 3 years ago through a friend of mine. I started with my own private labeling and launching products of my own. Got asked to start consulting for some other brands that were off Amazon to try and help them with everything end-to-end.

What's up, online empire academy? Joshua Woodward here. Today we have Daryl Weber on and this is the 2.0. We had him earlier on just to talk about branding, to get this idea started. He recently put out a book called Brand Seduction. It goes through the idea of how neuro science can help marketers build memorable brands. Yes I'm reading that because I couldn't remember all of it.

Daryl, how are you doing, man?

Daryl:

I'm doing great, man. Thanks for having me back.

Joshua:

Absolutely. I'm excited. If you guys hadn't watched our last live show with Dean and I, both of us are getting passionate about branding, especially with some of the things that Amazon's rolling out and some of the things that we're doing as a team. Branding is becoming more and more relevant and more and more important with becoming an ecommerce seller. We talked about how important it is to set your future up to develop a brand. I think it's so timely and so exciting to have Daryl on again, especially with his book coming out that's all about branding. I think it's a really timely thing.

Daryl, will you just give a little background about this book and how you got started with this concept?

Daryl:

Sure. It started out, I was fascinated by how the brain works and how the mind works in general. In undergrad I studied psychology and focused on cognitive neuro science. Just out of that fascination for wanting to understand how people work. How we tick.

I started working in marketing over 15 years ago now. Advertising in a brand strategy consulting firm. All through that time, I was always curious about how the psychology of it fits into this whole thing. A lot of marketers are thinking about these different ways of reaching people and connecting with consumers but it felt like they weren't truly understanding how they were connecting to the consumers minds and brains. It felt like they were making a lot of assumptions. The science wasn't quite there.

Just because of that I wanted to dig more deeply into it and say, “How do consumers minds operate? How are we getting them to buy one thing over another? How does consumer loyalty work? How do we get someone to be habitually buying our brand or product?”

These are things that have been studied. There's a ton of research on consumer psychology and consumer behavior. There's academic journals and people who study this but it wasn't getting communicated over to the marketers that I thought could benefit from it.

With my book, I was fascinated by that stuff. I was reading it, I was interested in it. I found that all the people I was working with weren't aware of it. I wanted to write a book that could really translate it over and bridge that gap. Do it in a way that was insightful, fun to read, hopefully entertaining and interesting. Also just easily applicable. Especially the creatives in marketing.

There is A New Strategy for Expanding Your Amazon and eBay Business

I have used a similar strategy as the one we are talking about today for getting Product at a steep discount but Mike Hadad has taken this idea and super sized it.

One of the greatest problems in the ecom community is product. When you dont have product you dont have sales. The more quality product coming in the better quality sales you will be getting.

I had had enough of the garage sales. Waking up at 6 in the morning on a Saturday began to feel like a sin. So I thought to myself how in the world can I get these quality products im finding at garage sales without the hassle of the garage sale search. Thats when it clicked. Craigslist that you will buy peoples goods so they dont have to go through the hassle of a garage sale.

I had fixed prices, fixed rules and a truck. Within a week I had 3 hits and a solid amount of sorting to be done.

This has continued to be one of the best and most lucrative ways to optimize my time, energy and resources….until I heard about what Mike Hadad was doing with his business iSold It.

He has a business that basically consigns peoples goods for them on his top rated ebay account. this was one of those OH MY GOSH moments for me. Why had I not thought to do this?

I am all about partnering. Empire you know that, and what better way to optimize my time than have people coming to me to sell there stuff on amazon and eBay.

Now i know you are probably thinking, Im not going to make as much money as i would if it was my own product or if i bought the item outright. See thats what I thought but think about it. If you already are listing, packing and shipping all day anyway why not leverage one more thing and start making an extra 30% for almost no upfront cost.

I love this model and I have definitely been inspired.

I would highly recommend going and checking out what mike has built. It is a beautiful business and something I have some mad respect for.

how many hours do you think you have spent shipping products out of your house? I could never count it. What if there was a better way?

If you have been in the industry for a while im sure you have heard about fulfillment centers or packing warehouse. For those of you who have not, let me break this down.

When you find goods with online arbitrage and or you are ready to ship over your newly produced private label products you need somewhere to drop these products off too.

If you are anything like me the last thing on earth you want it 3,000 brand new units being dropped off on your driveway. Fulfillment centers start by giving you a place to drop these goods off too.

The next step is getting the products out of the manufacturers boxes or out of the Walmart boxes, stickers taken off, then FBA stickers on and put into their correct boxes to be shipped. Yup you guessed it Fulfillment centers do that all for you.

Next you will need to ship those boxes out. I have a truck but i still end up making multiple stops.

That is the beauty of a fulfillment center all of these incredibly frustrating and time consuming processes are completely taken care of.

Empire…..stop wasting your time shipping boxes to Amazon, just let a fulfillment center do it for you.

I hope you guys listen to that podcast. It's awesome, if you haven't. He had talked about kind of the use of online arbitrage and a prepping company. This is a concept I've heard about before and something that I've looked into, but I haven't done it yet. I wanted to have Brenden on just to kind of talk through what it is that they do but also why it's going to help our businesses.

First, I want to hear your story, man. How are you doing?

Brenden :

I'm doing great, man. I appreciate you having me on today.

Joshua Woodward:

Absolutely. I'm excited. I'm excited to learn more about this. Tell me your story and how you got started with this.

Brenden :

Sure. I've always been involved in the … Well, I don't want to say always, but for a while now I've been selling online prior to jumping into the prep side of the world. Before we started Prime Zero Prep, which was early last year, I sold online in various platforms; eBay was where I started. I was doing that for about. I was doing that for about ten years part-time. I always had a full-time job while juggling eBay. About three and a half years ago I transitioned into Amazon because I was just fulfilling too many items on the eBay platform by myself. It became a struggle to balance that plus my full-time job. I wasn't ready to jump in with two feet at this point in my life.

FBA seemed like the perfect transition to kind of scale my business in the direction it was going without dedicating myself full-time to the business. I ended up taking a few courses, and it's funny … I actually took a course that Dean was part of. That was one of the first courses I ever took that was in relation to Amazon FBA. It's funny because I haven't talked to or heard about Dean in a while because I've kind of gone away from the pulse of Amazon because I'm doing the prep side of the business now. It's kind of interesting to see it come back full circle and be interviewed by Dean and his team, obviously, knowing that you guys are a partnership on this academy...

Today, I have on a very special guest. It's my uncle, but more than anything, Tim Nash is a coach, and has been coaching for a really, really long time. I wanted to introduce you, and I wanted you to just tell people what you've been up to and your back story on how you got there.

Tim:

Sure. Well, first of all, thanks for having me, Josh. Yeah. Well, like you said, I'm in Munich now. I'm originally from Los Angeles, but probably for about the last 21 years or so, I've been, for the most part, living outside of the states. My story is not a traditional one. It's taken a few twist and turns. After 3 years of working in the financial services industry in the Los Angeles area, I decided to do something completely different. I'm talking you back a long time ago, probably a few years after you were born, probably.

Tim:

A couple of years after you were born. I decided to … I have never been out of the country. I was 23 years old. I've been working at a bank, and I was working at mutual funds house. I was 23, but I felt like I was going on 63, and wanted to do something different. I got a passport. I sold or I gave everything away that I owned, and I went over to far east Asia to teach English. Didn't know anything about teaching or South Korea, but there was an opportunity, they were looking for English teachers, so I went and did that sort of on a whim. While I was there, I had a chance to visit Japan, fell in love with Japan and that area of the world, and ended up staying there for over 3 years, teaching and traveling around Japan and Southeast Asia.

Yeah, we just want to talk through what drop-shipping is for those of you who don't know what it is and then how it can actually help your Amazon business. The big question I've been getting is the legal side of it. Is it legal? We are going to talk through Dean, talk with Dean through this subject and I just want the biggest break because I have a ton of questions too.

Dean first off, tell me how the heck did you get started with drop-shipping? It's so random.

Dean:

Well first off I apologize for the room. This is not my studio. This is my son's room. We have stars and pictures and all our stuff. I got basically kicked out of my studio because it also happens to be where my littlest baby sleeps so I don't get to have the cool mic like you do today at least.

Yeah, it's interesting. I mean for those who know me for a while I like doing the online stuff like not the physical product stuff. I do all the online marketing. Podcasting I used to do, now that Josh is basically way better at that than me. I give it to him and he's like taking it to the next level. Webinars all those different things. I just don't like touching physical product not that it's bad, it's just doesn't coincide with my nature.

It was interesting. Drop-shipping never appealed to me. It's been around forever, honestly. Everyone knows what drop-shipping is for the most part. There's so many different ways to do it, I never actually went into it saying, “Hey, I want to drop-ship some stuff.

So many of us have been wasting needless time on online arbitrage. Between sourcing, listing and shipping this method can seriously drain of time.

For those of you that are not familiar, Online arbitrage is the practice of buying something online one site and selling it almost immediately in another place where it is worth more. Most people tend to sell on Amazon and eBay. This is a fantastic way to make money. For those of you starting out i could not recommend this method more.

I do want to bring to light one major problem with this method. As i said above, It takes a ton of time! It all starts with research. You begin by searching on a site you love. Once you find a product for a great price you check the item on amazon or eBay. This process goes on and on. Once you are done sourcing you have opened dozens of pages for cross comparison and have used hours and hours of valuable time. That is just the start.

The dream is to drive traffic to your amazon listings while you sit back and relax. Most people are missing one of the biggest opportunities for profits out there, Social media. Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are massive market places waiting to be tapped. Posting multiple times a day can help build community, build brand identity and ultimately drive massive traffic to your listings. We all know big traffic means big money. Some of you may have heard my story about my dad and I starting a vintage bicycle restoration business, for those of you that haven’t I will give you the short version. My dad as a young man worked in a Schwinn bicycle shop in Southern California. He has always had a love for bikes but moved on to bigger things. A few years back he reignited this passion when he picked up a few of these 1970s Schwinns for a business idea I had been working on. Soon enough we had more bikes than we knew what to do with. We decided that we would test the market on eBay. We started with a sale a month. I knew this wasn't going to work for us so I gave some different social media platforms a try. Within 24 hours we had increased our views by 100% and within a week we had sold 3 bicycles. We continued with this model and ended up selling off all of our bikes.

When I would slack on posting about them our sales would fall. When I was great about it sale would be great.
