In the book Getting to Yes, Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, Roger Fisher and William Ury tell the story of the orange.  It is a vivid illustration of the difference between interests and positions. When we state a position, it’s a proxy for our interest.  If we focus on the interests behind positions, we may more easily find creative solutions to conflict. that we should focus on our interests and not our positions.
