The ORs are back, this time with an installment about where the conflict known as the American Civil War begins, Fort Sumter. In this episode of the ORs, Bill, Ty and Steve discuss the origins of Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor, SC and erected following the War of 1812. The construction of the fort is covered in detail along with the political tensions that come into play at the end of 1860 and echo through the early months of 1861. Events leading up to the firing on Fort Sumter are covered mostly in chronological order, including the firing on the "Star of the West." The actual 36-hour bombardment is covered in detail including the actual withdrawal from the fort and the first "casualty" of the war during the 100-gun salute. The episode wraps up with some overlooked details about what transpires exactly four years after Major Robert Anderson surrenders the fort, when now Major General Anderson raises the American flag back over the fort for the first time since he surrendered it exactly four years to the day earlier. We hope you enjoy this episode. Thank you for listening!
