The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with another episode from the ORs. In this episode, Bill and Steve, discuss the perplexing "why" behind Harpers Ferry. If you have visited Harpers Ferry or looked at it through pictures, at some point you likely asked yourself WHY an arsenal / armory / fort was placed in such a horrible position to be defended. Hopefully this episode will help shed some light on the WHY behind Harpers Ferry. From the decision of George Washington to place an armory / arsenal there because of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers to the establishment of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroads, Harpers Ferry became a crucial inland logistical supply hub with the capability of supplying the northeastern region. The only other large scale armory / arsenal at that time being located in Massachusetts. Harpers Ferry was essentially created without the forethought of a Civil War dividing the region nearly 70 years later. While Harpers Ferry could in fact be its own specific series, Bill and Steve stick to the facts in a concise timeline and cover the importance of Harpers Ferry during the Civil War as a lead in to the follow on episode covering the importance of the Shenandoah Valley. Again, we thank each and every one of you for continued support of the podcast and the Gettysburg Guard and hopefully you walk away from this episode with a better understanding of the WHY behind Harpers Ferry. Always Forward!
