In the early Fall of 1941, a small region near Bryansk, on the Russo-Ukrainian border, organized itself into an autonomous republic, the Lokot Autonomous Region. This was made possible by the German invasion of course, but until 1944, it was a completely independent, National Socialist, Russian republic roughly the size of Lebanon, with a population of 600,000. What this little republic was able to achieve in such a short time and under such harsh circumstances is extraordinary.
