It is almost unanimous in the west that the word “slave” derives from the ethnos “Slav,” since they were so significant in the slave markets of southern Europe from the 9th to the 10th centuries. This is a simplistic theory bound up with the Normanist debate (which this show covered a few years ago). Like all simple theories, there are many problems with it, both logical and factual. It's yet another myth that needs to be brought down.
