The Outliers

Video game sequels can be hit or miss depending on what expectations gamers may have. Sometimes a developer may want to include new mechanics or take a franchise in a different direction with hopes of expanding the target audience. When the product doesn't meet the standards of the hype, backlash can be severe. We're discussing how this dynamic plays out in the current generation of video games and when expectations are reasonable and when they aren't. We touch on other aspects of the gaming industry that have soured the perspective of gamers towards developers and publishers what effect thats had on consumers. Also: our favorite Spongebob moments as we mourn the passing of Stephen Hillenburg.

Now that we're in between holidays it's back to business as we catch up with Adam and his full impressions of Red Dead Redemption II. New titles are releasing and, no surprise, there is a lot of criticism to go around for the big devs and publishers. Is it warranted? Its a mixed bag. We're taking a look at the current state of AAA gaming and which changes are welcome and which are just misunderstood. Back end of the show we look forward to the CWs Arrowverse seasonal crossover and what that may bring to the shows.

It's been a very sad week for us here at the Outliers. Stan Lee, The Creator himself has passed and we spend the opening of the show paying our respects and marveling at his life's work. Then we switch gears and dive into our individual experiences with anime, both as shows and movies. From classic 80's all the way up to the current explosion of anime here in America, there is much to be experienced. We take a look at the tropes of the medium and some of the best anime available in 2018!

This week should've been exciting with Microsoft holding the Xbox conference X018. Unfortunately not much was announced. So we're gonna go over the details while we poke fun and hope for a better showing from Microsoft. Of course the week wouldn't be complete without some kind of Youtubers pulling some kind of BS. This week it's Ethan Ralph and Sargon of Akkad. What exactly happened? Who knows. Join us as we wade through the crap.

Another example of indignant fans reacting to creators in a questionable manner with the announcement of Diablo Immortal at BlizzCon this week. What is becoming of consumers as this trend of entitlement continues to grow? Lot's to talk about on that front. Youtuber are at it again as well with more money grabs by selling garbs. And finally we get a little taste of what Red Dead Redemption 2 has in store for gamers.

Happy 100th episode to us! We don't necessarily have a special for you, but we have a great episode in the vein of the Halloween season. First up, Castlevania is back with season two on Netflix. We do a bang up job explaining the video game backgrounds of two of Draculas generals, Hector and Isaac. Then for the meat of the show we look back through gaming history at what titles have come to define the survival horror genre and how that specific type of game has had its high and low points. Hope everyone has a terrifying Halloween!

A couple of surprises from the Marvel entertainment front this week. We look at what may become of Power Man and Iron Fist now that Netflix dropped the ax. And since it's so close to Halloween we're gonna discuss a few horror games that may have been victims themselves of the Youtube Lets Play genre of videos. Also we have a couple of video game recommendations for you to check out this spooky holiday season!

The planets must've aligned because both of the Outliers watched the Venom movie and were ready to give impressions in the same week. Yeah the joke is that we're super busy with different schedules. BUT, great Venom discussion to kick off this episode. Speaking of episodes, we learned that Netflix won't be making any more for the not so Immortal Iron Fist unfortunately. Back half of the show is a follow to the Youtuber/Betterhelp debacle. The rabbit hole does indeed go deeper.

Marvel fatigue? After learning about the comic book roots of the characters they're talking about in recent news, no fatigue from us. In fact, the potential for another great generation of the MCU is very much there. We're digging into The Eternals. And its quite interesting how they could fit right into the current MCU. We're also looking at the Dark Avengers rosters to see how they could make such a team work and stay true to the comics. Packed show this week!

This week's episode touches on mental health issues and resources available for those suffering. That being said, the discussion is framed around advertising choices that YouTubers have been making of late. Videos of YouTubers claiming to be "burntout" and "depressed" are all over. Funny thing is, a new sponsor is making the rounds on some of the biggest channels on the platform. And yes, the sponsor claims to offer services for just what all the YouTubers are going through. Coincidence? Listen and decide.
