What’s up golfers? Welcome back to the Pace Of Change Golf Podcast, I’m your co-host Scott Dawley, and along with Dude Spellings, we are broadcasting the evolution of golf in the 21st century.
What does that mean? Each week we profile and interview the leading innovative minds in and around the world of golf. Pioneers in the alt golf space, tech entrepreneurs, industry association insiders, human performance experts, to sum it up...we turn the mic on and let the future of golf come out!!
October is Speedgolf Month on the POC, and Speedgolfers, we have a new World Champion. That’s right, at the top of the field 2-time winner, defending champion, and world #1 Rob Hogan finished in 4th, less than 1 stroke behind 3rd place Mack McLain and 2nd place Wes Cupp. But in the end nobody could not catch up to #8 ranked Jaime Young, who himself into the round 1 lead with a record tying 72, even par performance. In the final round Jaime kept a clean speedgolf scorecard, no high numbers, just 5 bogeys, and the rest pars to capture his second win, and at the age of 52, his first World Championship!
After the event, I caught up with Dude Spellings and Allan Phillips, who finished 6th this year, to recap world championship week while the experience was fresh for them. There are some great insights here, so let’s get to it.
IMPORTANT*****
First, there are a few important announcements we want to get out there into the world. For those of you following the Speedgolf Power Rankings, Jaime Young can’t go into 2017 as the #8 ranked Speedgolfer, right? So we are preparing to initiate another round of voting to take the results from this week’s world championship into account. Be on the lookout for more about the Speedgolf Power Rankings brought to you by The Pace Of Change Golf Podcast very soon.
Dude and I are excited to announce Speedgolf Texas will be hosting one last final Speedgolf event of 2016. It’s called the Pace of Play Challenge, and it’s happening on 12/31, that’s right New Year’s Eve day at the Wolfdancer course at Hyatt Lost Pines, near Austin, Tx. As far as we know, it’s the only golf event in the country specifically designed around the issue of pace of play. We want to show the golf world that it doesn't have to take 4 or 5 hours to play, and that it’s actually more fun when you pick up the pace. Wolfdancer is a top-rated resort course in the Texas Hill Country, and will be a good challenge for golfers and Speedgolfers alike.
There will be a Speedgolf Division, with a pro purse if we can get 5 pros to commit to the event. So let us know right away if you’re interested in competing.
And then we send of teams of two in what we are calling Pace Of Play Flights. Golfers will be able to choose between a 2 hour or 3 hour flight, and will be penalized one stroke for every minute over the maximum flight time.
Finally, we will be continuing the annual Last Chance Open, a non-timed 2 person team event with gross and net flights.
We’ve opened registration at SpeedgolfTexas.com. You can find out everything you need to know about the event, and if you have more questions, please reach out to us.
Speaking of events, did you know the annual New Zealand and Australia Speedgolf Championships are scheduled for March 4-5 in Rotorua, New Zealand, and the following weekend in Melbourne Australia. Speedgolf USA is putting a player package together and will be sending a Speedgolf team. I’m going, and I want you to come!
We will be working with both speedgolf associations down under to create an unforgettable trip, with plenty of speedgolf, golf, outdoor running, sightseeing, and more. If you’re interested please sign up at USASpeedgolf.com so we can send you more information.
