In this episode of the Pain Free Athlete Podcast, Dana Jones speaks with Dr. Saara Haapenen, a sport and exercise psychologist, former elite diver, and performance coach who works with athletes and professionals around the world.
Dr. Saara shares how narrowly missing the 2008 Olympic Games changed the direction of her life and ultimately led her to study motivation, performance, and sustainable behavior change. She explains why motivation is not something you either have or do not have, but something that can be influenced by your environment, mindset, culture, and sense of competence, autonomy, and connection.
Dana and Dr. Saara also explore ADHD as a potential performance advantage. Dr. Saara discusses the creativity, intuition, energy, and out-of-the-box thinking that often accompany an ADHD brain, while also acknowledging challenges such as procrastination, task switching, people-pleasing, and waiting until the last minute to begin.
She introduces her FUNCOM model, a practical framework for making difficult or low-interest tasks easier to start:
- F — Fun: Add enjoyment, play, or interest.
- U — Urgency: Create a meaningful deadline or external pressure.
- N — Novelty: Make the task new or change the environment.
- C — Challenge: Turn it into a competition with yourself or someone else.
- O — Others: Use accountability, community, or body doubling.
- M — Movement: Add physical movement or sensory stimulation to support focus.
You’ll also learn why starting small is often more effective than making a dramatic lifestyle overhaul, how “deciding in advance” can help you navigate temptation, and why making choices for your future self may be the key to creating lasting change.
Whether you are an athlete, entrepreneur, professional, or someone trying to build healthier habits, this conversation offers practical ways to work with your brain instead of constantly fighting against it.
