This discussion followed a screening of Canadian-Israeli journalist Lia Tarachansky’s documentary film 'On The Side Of The Road', an exploration of the power of denial. The film focuses on Israeli collective denial of the events of 1948 that led to the state’s foundation on the back of ethnic cleansing and the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem. The discussion took the form of a question and answer session in which a wide range of topics were discussed.

Dr. Yaser Alashqar, a Palestianian academic living in Ireland, gave an insightful, important and at times infuriating, eyewitness account of the destruction, and resistance, he observed when he travelled back to his native Gaza just days after Israel's 2014 summer slaughter that killed over 2,100 Palestinians ended.

By examining how the tourist narratives of a specific contested site in Jerusalem represent both the site and the tourists themselves, the paper examines how tourism can serve to provide a discourse of disempowerment and even negation to those living in the destination country.

This public meeting saw the Irish launch of the international ‘Campaign for the Freedom of Marwan Barghouthi and All Palestinian Political Prisoners’. The meeting took place on Wednesday 7th May at 7pm in Wynn’s Hotel, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin and was  addressed by Marwan’s wife Fawda Barghouthi and Neeshan Balton of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation in South Africa.

This was the launch of the official Irish affiliate to the International Campaign, which itself was launched from Nelson Mandela’s cell in the apartheid-era prison on Robben Island in October 2013.

Mohammad Al-Azza is a 24-year-old photographer and award winning filmmaker and the Director of the Media Unit in the Lajee Cultural Center, Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem. Mohammed travelled to Ireland as part of the Lajee Cultural Tour and will spoke about life as a journalist in Palestine and the difficulties facing the community living in Aida Refugee Camp under the military occupation.
