Don't Worry It's Confidential

the paradoxes in therapy

Listen Later

As I’m sure you could imagine, in my line of work, the opportunities for self reflection are never ending.

Today’s guest is a colleague and a friend, who chats with me all about our experiences so far as young therapists. Throughout the episode, we identify the paradoxes, dichotomies, and stressors of our jobs that are sometimes overwhelming.

As professional listeners, emotion processors, and advice givers, we both admit to struggling with practicing what we preach. Setting boundaries, practicing self care, and overcoming limiting beliefs sometimes still requires as much discipline and internal work for us as they do for our clients, so we share our strategies for maintaining these, while also normalizing how nuanced and difficult it can be to do so.

We spend a lot of time talking through the high stakes of our jobs and how common burnout is amongst our peers. We therapize each other on how to best handle waves of emotion that come up associated with the subject matter of our work, and at the end of the episode, we answer some questions you asked us on Instagram about therapy.

Even though this episode is centered around our careers as therapists, the advice we share and strategies we teach throughout could be helpful to anyone seeking better work-life balance.
